On Sunday, we have the privilege of hearing from Rev. Dr. Camden Bucey! Camden (PhD, Westminster Theological Seminary) is executive director of Reformed Forum, a minister at Hope OPC in Grayslake, and historian of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church.

And we have even more reason than Samson to call upon the Lord. For nowhere do we see the Lord use the schemes of the enemy to escalate salvation more clearly and gloriously than at the cross. There God’s deliverer was bound and handed over to his enemies. They come to him shouting and mocking—and they believe they have finally dealt with the problem. But the enemy’s apparent triumph became his greatest defeat when Jesus Christ rose from the dead, victorious over all sin and death.

Our great hope is that God used the greatest evil ever committed—the crucifixion of his Son—to accomplish the greatest good of all. Those who crucified him did not know it. At first, even his closest disciples did not see it. But Jesus was crucified “at the hands of lawless men” “according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God” (Acts 2:23). They meant evil. God used it to accomplish the salvation of his people.

Jephthah repaid insult with insult. When Jesus was reviled, “he did not revile in return” (1 Peter 2:23). Jephthah exalted himself. Jesus humbled himself, bearing the wrath he didn’t deserve that our wounded pride might be forgiven, our hearts renewed, and our fellowship restored. And the cross that reconciles us to God also binds us together as brothers and sisters in Christ.

As Jephthah’s daughter stood in the place where the defeated enemy should have stood, Jesus stood in the place where God’s enemies deserve to stand. But unlike the death of Jephthah’s daughter, Christ’s sacrifice was not a tragic waste. It accomplished the salvation of his people. Like Jephthah, this deliverer was despised and rejected by men, yet God’s chosen instrument for salvation. But where Jephthah’s sacrifice brought an end to his family line, Jesus’ sacrifice secured descendants like the stars of heaven, gathering people from every tribe, tongue, and nation.
