As Jephthah’s daughter stood in the place where the defeated enemy should have stood, Jesus stood in the place where God’s enemies deserve to stand. But unlike the death of Jephthah’s daughter, Christ’s sacrifice was not a tragic waste. It accomplished the salvation of his people. Like Jephthah, this deliverer was despised and rejected by men, yet God’s chosen instrument for salvation. But where Jephthah’s sacrifice brought an end to his family line, Jesus’ sacrifice secured descendants like the stars of heaven, gathering people from every tribe, tongue, and nation.
