Valencia Presbyterian Church is tucked away in the small, quaint borough of Valencia, Pennsylvania. Our church is small enough to feel intimate and warm, but large enough to provide a number of programs and opportunities for ministry to help both children and adults to love and serve Christ. We strive to recognize and nurture the Christ in ourselves and each person that we encounter along the way.

VPC has a long tradition of outreach and service to its members and the community. Our vision is to grow the body of Christ through faith, love and service. Following the martyrdom of Stephen, the church scatters from Jerusalem leaving only the Apostles to remain in the city. The fear for their future was palpable. Yet, the flight from Jerusalem reveals the fulfilling of Acts 1:8 “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” This week we will look at the second and third steps, Judea and Samaria, and explore the cultural significance of the church becoming witnesses in these territories and the historical significance of them being included in the reconciling message of Jesus! After several weeks of focusing on Stephen’s confrontation with the Sanhedrin we have finally reached the climax of this section of Acts. Stephen is condemned for the false charges of blasphemy and the sentence is carried out by the religious leaders. Stephen becomes the first martyr in church history. We will spend time looking at one of the most surprising parts of this whole scene: Stephen’s forgiveness of those who are killing him. In our scripture this week, Stephen stands to deliver a defense of his faith to the Sanhedrin following their accusations of blasphemy. Stephen confronts the false witness that is borne against him and roots the faith he is living out in the history of Moses and the history of the temple just as the Apostles have been doing since Pentecost. This witness confronts the charges and boldly takes a stand for truth. In our message this week we will explore the speech Stephen gives and see how it is yet another opportunity for the religious leaders of the Sanhedrin to open their eyes and turn away from their persecution of the followers of the Way, and we will see how Stephen’s message mirrors others throughout Scripture who have taken similarly bold stands. The newly appointed helpers, or deacons, have gone about their ministry in Jerusalem and it has taken them into communities of foreigners living there. At one of the synagogues where he is ministering, Stephen is seized upon and taken into custody to go before the High Priest and Sanhedrin. Brought in for questioning, Stephen has a choice to make. Will he confess to following “in the way of Jesus” or will he succumb to fear and get “in the way of Jesus”? This Sunday we will start a four week focus on Stephen and his persecution. This first week we will look at Stephen’s similarity to Jesus, how suffering fits in our understanding of church today, and how we too have a choice of which way we will be in the way of Jesus. As the community of believers is growing in Jerusalem, the needs are beginning to grow as well. This group is working hard to live faithfully and in ways that are consistent with the Old Testament. This means that they are taking extra care to focus on groups that are often on the margins: widows, orphans, foreigners - those who might not fit in. As the need to care for these groups expands, the Apostles set aside seven leaders to serve the people in need. On Sunday we will look at why the early church did this, what the consequences have been throughout church history, and the vital necessity of embracing change to meet the needs of the church as those needs present themselves. “Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love…” This line from the third verse of “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing” confesses the experience of God’s people throughout history. Whether it was the Israelites who turned from the true worship of God or the Pharisees challenging Jesus’ words and teaching, the Bible gives us many examples of people who need to hear prophetic words to turn around and come back to the Lord. The deeper we go into the book of Acts, the more surely, we see the growth and life of the church flourishing and positively impacting society around them. We see clearly that one of the most important ministries of the early church was to bring about healing through miracles. It begs the question, what is it that we do, as a church today, to bring about healing?
