This Sunday, June 28th, we continue our series that looks at the history and significance of some of our favorite hymns.

This week we look at: "Rock of Ages."

This hymn was written by Augustus Toplady who, like John and Charles Wesle,y was ordained into the Anglican Church. He, however, eventually became a Calvinist and wrote some terrible things about John Wesley.

This Sunday's sermon will cover a lot of ground. We'll learn a bit about Toplady, explore Calvinism and its significant differences compared to Arminianism, and we'll explore why this hymn, despite theological differences, remains a beloved hymn for Calvinists, Arminians, and all theologies in between!

Jesus said the wise person builds their house on the rock. What does building your life on Christ look like for you?

A long-standing tradition at Yorkville UMC, we will be handing out chocolate chip cookies to all of the men who are in attendance on Sunday in recognition of Father's Day.

If a new series on our favorite hymns is not enough motivation, come for the COOKIES this Sunday, June 21st. :-)

πŸ“– WESLEY WISDOM WEDNESDAY πŸ“–

"Christ the Lord is risen today, Alleluia!
Earth and heaven in chorus say, Alleluia!
Raise your joys and triumphs high, Alleluia!
Sing, ye heavens, and earth reply, Alleluia!

Love's redeeming work is done, Alleluia!
Fought the fight, the battle won, Alleluia!
Death in vain forbids him rise, Alleluia!
Christ has opened paradise, Alleluia!

Lives again our glorious King, Alleluia!
Where, O death, is now thy sting? Alleluia!
Once he died our souls to save, Alleluia!
Where's thy victory, boasting grave? Alleluia!

Soar we now where Christ has led, Alleluia!
Following our exalted Head, Alleluia!
Made like him, like him we rise, Alleluia!
Ours the cross, the grave, the skies, Alleluia!

Hail the Lord of earth and heaven, Alleluia!
Praise to thee by both be given, Alleluia!
Thee we greet triumphant now, Alleluia!
Hail the Resurrection, thou, Alleluia!

King of glory, soul of bliss, Alleluia!
Everlasting life is this, Alleluia!
Thee to know, thy power to prove, Alleluia!
Thus to sing, and thus to love, Alleluia!"

This Sunday, June 21st, we will be starting a new series that looks at the history and significance of some of our favorite hymns.

This week we look at: "Christ the Lord Is Risen Today."

This Charles Wesley hymn has been the opening hymn for Methodist Easter services many, MANY years.

This Sunday's service will have an Easter theme (although EVERY Sunday is really Easter Sunday) and we will look at the origins of this hymn and the biblical references found within. We'll even try singing it with a completely different hymn tune.

It should be interesting! Hope to see you there. :-)
