It is with a heavy heart and deep sorrow that the St. Iakovos Retreat Center announces the passing of Joe Ours, known to many of us as ‘Bossman’.

Joe began his service to the Retreat Center property even before the Metropolis purchased it nearly 16 years go and continued that service from the time of purchase, through the construction phase and as the facility became operational.

From its infancy, Joe was an ever-present figure playing an integral part in the daily operations of the St. Iakovos Retreat Center. Although he retired in 2019, he would continue to visit the grounds on occasion and was always eager to provide any assistance that was needed.

Many will remember Farmer Joe for operating the old miniature train and for driving around campers and other guests on the wagon as part of the hayride. Others will remember Bossman for his wealth of knowledge regarding the property and the buildings as well as his ability to fix or repair almost anything.

For those close to him he was an endless source of laughter, information and stories. At this time, let us keep his wife Kathy Ours and his family in our prayers. We will miss you Bossman!

May His Memory Be Eternal!

On Bright Friday, His Eminence Metropolitan Nathanael and the St. Iakovos Retreat Center Board, represented by President Paul Loupakos, honored Steve Theofanous and Sam Markos (not pictured) of the Greek American Restaurant Association (GARA) and the Greek American Restaurant Cooperative (GARC) for the generous contribution from the organizations.

They received the crystal award from His Eminence Metropolitan Nathanael and the Metropolis of Chicago. The lower level patio at the Tomaras Lodge is now named for GARA and GARC. The organizations will be formally honored at the unveiling of the completed signage.

As part of our Bright Friday Reception, Mrs. Georgia Farlekas, steward of St. Demetrios Church, Chicago, was honored by His Eminence Metropolitan Nathanael, presenting her with the silver cross and engraved crystal for her benevolent donation.

The St. Iakovos Retreat Center Board has named a cottage in honor of Georgia Farlekas and in memory of her late husband Nicholas Farlekas. The Retreat Center also gifted her a plaque and a tribute photo biography sign for the interior of the cottage.

Photographed here is Mrs. Farlekas with His Eminence Metropolitan Nathanael, Retreat Center Board President, Paul Loupakos, and her family.

On Friday, May 10, over 400 parishioners from around the Chicago Metropolis attended Bright Friday at the St. Iakovos Retreat Center in Kansasville, Wisconsin. Approximately 375 attendees stayed after Liturgy and enjoyed a delicious lunch.

Several church groups arrived on buses provided by a generous grant to the parishes from The Hellenic Foundation for Transportation. The St. Iakovos Retreat Center and the Chicago Metropolis can’t thank The Hellenic Foundation enough for their continued support!

"Let your roots grow down into Him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness." (Colossians 2:7)

Spring has just begun to sprout at the St. Iakovos Retreat Center! Pictured here, you'll find the Arbor Vitae trees donated by the wonderful ladies of the Metropolis Chicago Philoptochos. Planted last fall, these trees are seeing the beginnings of their growth now! Thank you to the ladies! 🌳🌳🌳

Last week, the Metropolis of Chicago Philoptochos hosted a send-off dinner for former President Marilyn Tzakis, honoring all of her hard work and philanthropy. Philoptochos is not only one of our biggest donors, but also a partner in ministry for the stewards of the Metropolis.

The SIRC Board attended the dinner to thank Marilyn for her leadership and support for the Retreat Center. We look forward to working with the new Metropolis of Chicago Philoptochos President, Kathy Katrakis, in the future!

Happy Valentine’s Day! Thank you to the SIRC family for always spreading the love! 💞💞
