Did you know? | The Tabernacle ✨

You’ve probably seen the tabernacle at St. Mary’s many times, but do you know why it holds such an important place in our church?

The tabernacle is the sacred place where the Blessed Sacrament—the consecrated Eucharist—is reserved. Because we believe that Jesus Christ is truly present in the Eucharist, Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity, we show special reverence when we are in His presence.

That’s why Catholics genuflect toward the tabernacle when entering or leaving a pew when the Blessed Sacrament is reserved there.

You may also notice the letters IHS on our tabernacle. They come from the Greek name of Jesus and have long been used as a Christian symbol representing the Holy Name of Jesus.

And that small red sanctuary lamp nearby? When it is burning, it indicates that the Blessed Sacrament is reserved in the tabernacle.

Next time you enter St. Mary’s, take a moment to look toward the tabernacle and remember:

Jesus is present. ❤️
