Ukiah Adventist Church is gearing up to reopen live services in the church, Sabbath, June 20. Things will be able to change in stages as the pandemic situation improves, but the following details how we will begin opening to in-person attendance.
The plan that will be executed by our church is based on state, county, NAD Risk Management, and Northern California Conference’s published guidelines for individual church planning and implementation.

You must NOT attend services
1) . . . if you have any kind of symptoms (coughing, fever, etc.)
2) . . . if someone in your home has any kind of symptoms
3) . . . if you have been exposed to anyone known to have symptoms

Responsibilities of each person attending services:
• Persons over the age of 60 are encouraged NOT to attend in person yet, but listen via the regular live stream which will continue as usual. (Click on Watch Live on the church website, ukiahsda.com.)
• No singing.
• Use a face covering (except children under 2 years old). A speaker may remove covering while presenting.
• Do not make physical contact with others (such as handshaking, hugging).
• Always maintain good social distances (at least 6 feet).
• Do not pause or gather in groups inside–come in directly to seating and leave directly outdoors before engaging in conversation.
• Wash hands or use sanitizer whenever handling items others may have handled.
• Sit in a designated area only with members of a single household.

Responsibilities of the church:
• Only open for church worship service. Sabbath School classes--adult and children's--cannot yet be held in the church.
• Limit attendance to 100 persons.
• Use gloves if handling things handled by others.
• Leave doors open wherever possible to reduce points handled by multiple people, or doors be opened by designated personnel.
• Post highly visible signs alerting attendees to wear face covering and to observe social distancing.
• Mark areas to sit and not sit, keeping household units safe distances apart.
• Control entrance and exit traffic flow to avoid clustering too close together.
- Ushers/greeters positioned to keep traffic moving into seating area or exiting to outdoors.
- Deacons will usher out pew-by-pew as previous traffic clears from aisles.
-We will dismiss the north side first, exiting the organ, center, and PA doors.
-Following, we will dismiss the south side next, exiting the organ, center, and south doors.
• Use only stand-mounted mics to avoid passing mics to multiple persons. Persons using mics are not to touch/adjust mics. Foam covers will be removed for easier sanitizing.
• Place boxes near exits for offerings so as not to pass offering plates from person to person.
• Use the HVAC feature to circulate outside air.
• Make a record of attendees each week for county health officials in case of an outbreak.
• Potlucks will not be held.
• Choir will not practice or perform.
• Lead music with one or far-spaced singers unless of one household. Same for special music.
• Remove hymnals from pews.
• Disable drinking fountains.
• Make hand sanitizer easily available at key locations.
• The pulpit is to be used only by the speaker of the day. Other presenters such as one reading scriptures or leading songs will each use their own music stand, if needed.
• Post signs inside and outside of restrooms that will encourage people to limit the number of persons inside and remind about responsible sanitation.
• Keep the Home Missions Desk closed.

The NCC Executive Officers Have Issued the Following Statement:

As leaders of the Northern California Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, we join our brothers and sisters in Christ by publicly standing against racism and injustice.

We feel silence is complicity. No matter how difficult and uncomfortable, we must individually and collectively break down the walls of separation that destroy the essential rights of human dignity, self-worth, and freedom in our region and in our churches. And we must communicate – with a unified voice, sense of urgency, and unwavering commitment – that intolerance, violence, discrimination, and marginalization are unacceptable.

We must: “Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow” (Isaiah 1:17). We act because Jesus taught us to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Galatians 5:14) and to “do for others what you want them to do for you” (Matthew 7:12). Standing up for social justice means you believe all people have rights and have been created in the image of God, that each human deserves dignity, the same as we desire for ourselves. Never should anyone fear going out in public because of skin color, ethnicity, or legal status. We cannot allow this type of fear to exist in our neighborhoods, and it starts with us – as Christians.

Like our early Adventist pioneers who advocated for abolition, equality, and justice, we urge our church members to engage the community with compassion, while bravely speaking out against racism, injustice, violence, and hatred. As disciples of Christ, our epic mission is to tell everyone in our sphere of influence about Christ’s unconditional love and His promise to return. We are not alone. The Holy Spirit is here to guide and empower us as we help transform and heal our communities with the love and compassion of Jesus Christ.

As one of the most ethnically diverse Christian faiths in California, we as Seventh-day Adventists have a unique and transformative opportunity to demonstrate in both words and actions what it means to be inclusive, kind, just, gentle, and full of love for every person no matter their differences.

Today let us prayerfully make our homes, churches, and schools a place where people find peace that passes all understanding and the unconditional love of Jesus Christ.

An update from our Northern California Conference President, Marc Woodson.

A Message from the NCC President

Certainly, many of you have been watching the news and all that is being said about churches and reopening. Our aim as a conference is to glorify God by being good stewards of our health, caring for our neighbors, and showing appropriate respect to state and local authorities. To those ends, our goal is to have no COVID-19 breakouts associated with a Northern California Conference church. We ask that you partner with us as we seek the protection of our churches...
We are working diligently with our pastors and church leaders to develop and issue guidelines that will assist in the church reopening process. Hopefully, these guidelines will be of assistance when state and local authorities allow our churches to reopen...
We realize that all are desirous of safely opening our churches as soon as possible. The Northern California Conference expects that all churches, schools, and ministries should comply with the guidance of state and local authorities in responding to the COVID-19 virus. In California, reopening churches is still part of Stage 3. At this time, many counties have asked and been granted permission to move forward to reopen Stage 2 businesses...

Please continue to pray with us as we daily seek God's guidance and wisdom during this challenging health crisis...
Marc K. Woodson
President
Northern California Conference
