Great Cloud of Witnesses
by Rev. EvaMarie Campbell

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12: 1-2

My cloud of witnesses is growing. I have very mixed feelings about this.

On the one hand my cloud of witnesses includes all those saints who have gone before us. I have been richly blessed by so many formative relationships with people who are no longer with us in bodily form. First and foremost, my parents Rev. Charles and Marge Herndon. Also, my grandparents, Ethel and Mary Gasway and Gerald and Margaret Herndon. Then the list grows from there to include Sunday School teachers, camp counselors, university and seminary professors, many United Methodist ministers to many lay people within The United Methodist Church and of course members of Boston Avenue United Methodist Church. I am forever thankful for all the encouragement, patience, and formation of my faith I received from each one.

My cloud of witnesses is growing. On the other hand, my cloud of witnesses includes many people I encounter on a day-to-day basis. I continue to be richly blessed by so many formative relationships. First and foremost, my husband, Myers Campbell, and our two children, Hannah and Dallas. My two brothers, Mark and Alan Herndon and their families. Then the list grows from there to include my colleagues in ministry, at Boston Avenue United Methodist Church and across the Conference and country. I’m blessed with wonderful friends and neighbors and most certainly the members of Boston Avenue United Methodist Church, those I’ve know for 36 years to those who’ve recently joined us. All a blessing. All apart of my great cloud of witnesses and I am forever thankful.

Take time today to give thanks for your great cloud of witnesses and remember the blessings bestowed upon you. Amen

The elevator that runs to the youth departments on the third and fourth floors will be out of order for the summer while work is done over the next approximately nine weeks.

People requiring elevator access for the first and second floors during this time can use the tower elevator (off of the 13th St. entrance) or the Jubilee elevator (located in Jubilee Hall).

Have you brought formula or diapers yet for our drive for Emergency Infant Services? We are grateful for all of the generous contributions so far as we work to be Christ's love in action. Using Blaire (our Membership Associate and Missions Assistant) for scale, you can see we have collected quite a few!

We are still collecting items through this Sunday. Items can be dropped off at the table in Bishops' Hall, and financial donations may be made in person in the offering plate, by mail, and on the Boston Avenue app.

All brands and sizes of infant diapers and toddler pull-ups are welcome (open packages are ok!).

All brands and types of infant formula, such as soy, gentle, etc., are accepted. They must be unopened, commercially sealed and packaged, and unexpired.

For more information, contact Rev. Lisa Hines, Associate Minister of Mission at [email protected] or 918-699-0127

Prayer for Grace
by Rev. Betsy Stewart-Dooley

Holy One,
Your grace extends across every gulf we could create.
There is no place where Your presence will not meet me.
There is no distance Your love will not go.
You are undaunted by our attempts to turn from You.
You remember who we are.
You remember that we are wonderfully made
in Your very image,
and with Your very hands.
You see through our facades,
to the very person we are.
So we welcome You here with us,
and we lower our defenses,
that we might encounter one another anew.
Your grace is enough.
Amen.
