Believers in God and their ministers have always been persecuted. Religious leaders in Jerusalem tried to muzzle the truth, but they only succeeded in sending people to preach the Word throughout the land. The Roman Empire persecuted Christians with stakes and lions, but Godโ€™s Church exploded with growth. In Martin Lutherโ€™s day, both pope and emperor tried to limit the gospel movement that was spreading from Germany, but God led many people to speak his truth. God wants his people to keep the faith and preach the Word even in the face of opposition.

God bless your worship.

The Law was given through Moses. He was a marvelous leader of his people, but he could not take them to the Promised Land. The Law can never get Godโ€™s people to the promised land. Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. Joshua, the successor of Moses, defeated the enemies of the people and led them into the Promised Land. Jesus defeats our enemies and shepherds us as his flock. The gracious Gospel of forgiveness of sins through faith in Jesus is the only way to the promised land of heaven. Jesus leads us all the way there.

God bless your worship.

SAY IT OUT LOUD: GOD LOVES SINNERS!
They never forgot their past. Moses never forgot how he killed a man in a fit of anger. Paul never forgot how he had savaged the Church of God. Matthew never forgot how, as a tax collector for the Roman Empire, he was considered a traitor to his people.

But God forgot their past. He forgave all their sins and called them to proclaim his mercy. Christians are sinners whom God has mercifully called. Only mercy can explain why Jesus brings people to faith and promises them salvation. Only grace can explain how he calls them to serve as they are able, even in the ministry of the gospel. God loves sinners!

God bless your worship.

SEASON OF PENTECOST
Pentecost Day (Acts 2:1-41) is celebrated seven weeks after Easter and marks the birth of the Christian Church. The Sundays after Pentecost emphasize the life of the Church and the life of the Christian in light of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

GOD IN THREE PERSONS, BLESSED TRINITY
In the first half of the Church Year (Advent through Pentecost) we look at the life of Christโ€”his birth, ministry, death, resurrection, ascension, and the sending of the Holy Spirit. In the second half of the year, we look at the teachings of Christ. We begin by looking at one of the most mind-blowing truths: that God is triune.

Already in the very first chapter of the Bible we read, โ€œThen God said, โ€œLet us make mankind in our imageโ€ฆโ€ (Genesis 1:26). Note the singular โ€œGodโ€ and the plural โ€œus.โ€ Scripture teaches us that there is only one God but that he exists as three personsโ€”Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He is triune (three-in-one). This teaching is not some logical exercise or philosophical excursion. The doctrine of the Trinity is central to our salvation. The triune God is our Creator, Redeemer, and Sanctifier. Lose this doctrine, and as the Athanasian Creed says, you lose it all. A Jesus who is less than God is also less than a Savior.

So often, when life gets hard, we get frustrated. We donโ€™t understand how God is working always for our good. But the doctrine of the Trinity teaches us we cannot even comprehend Godโ€™s existence. How then, could we ever comprehend all his workings? On this Holy Trinity Sunday, let it be enough to know that all three personsโ€”Father, Son, and Spiritโ€”love us with an everlasting love.

God bless your worship.

HE LIVES TO POUR OUT HIS SPIRIT
When the disciples were distressed about Jesus ascending into heaven, he assured them, โ€œIt is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to youโ€ (John 16:7). That Advocate is the Holy Spirit. If Jesus had stayed in the grave, the Holy Spirit would have had no reason to enter the lives of disciples.

But Jesus lives, and it makes a difference. The Spirit provides faith and purpose for life. Pentecost, the celebration of the special arrival of the Holy Spirit, is the third great festival of the Church, along with the Nativity and the Resurrection. Pentecost closes the fifty-day period after Easter and ends the festival half of the church year. The Church dresses in red on this day to commemorate the tongues of fire that marked the Spiritโ€™s gift as well as the blood of the martyrs.

God bless your worship.

HE LIVES TO RULE ALL THINGS FOR THE CHURCH
Without the resurrection of Jesus, we would have to wonder who oversees the world. At times the world seems so chaotic. People claim to be in charge but they have limited power and strange ideas. Many of the ideas are harmful for Christians. Leaders seem to lead without acknowledging Jesus.
But he lives, and it makes a difference. Jesus is head over everything for the Church. At the time of Ascension, he takes his proper place. The Festival of the Ascension is one of the oldest and most joyful celebrations in the Christian Church. It will be observed by Christians until Christ returns to take us to be with him. God bless your worship.

CONFIRMATION SUNDAY
In our second service, five young people will publicly confirm their faith in Jesus Christ. They will be welcomed to partake of Holy Communion. All of us who are members of Redeemer went through a rite of confirmation either as children or adults. Let us use the service this morning to reaffirm our dedication to our Savior and our use of Godโ€™s word and sacraments.

Emeron - Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. - Proverbs 3:5-6
Colin - I Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. - Deuteronomy 31:6
Alanna - Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long. - Psalm 25:5
Richard - The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. - Psalm 23:1
Madison - So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. - Isaiah 41:10

HE LIVES TO CALL ME TO LIVE FOR HIM
Without the resurrection of Jesus, I would be tempted to live only for myself. After all, I have to be in good shape before I can be of help to anyone else, right? I think I know whatโ€™s right for me, and I can identify when other people are standing in the way of my self-improvement. If Jesus is dead, I donโ€™t have to worry about what he said or what he thinks.

But he lives, and it makes a difference. He takes care of my basic needs. He promises to do more for me than I can imagine. He puts people into my life so I can help them. Now I live for him.

God bless your worship.

HE LIVES TO BE THE ONLY WAY TO HEAVEN
Without the resurrection of Jesus, I would have to wonder if he wasnโ€™t just a human being. If my last view of him is a criminal crucified on a cross, he would look like someone to be rejected. He couldnโ€™t even help himself, much less anyone else!
But he lives, and it makes a difference. He is the only way to heaven. This gospel message is the most inclusive message in the world. The benefits of the resurrection of Jesus are meant for every man, woman, and child who has ever lived.

God bless your worship.
