"Lots of people try to explain the miracles of Jesus,
particularly this one.
I think because this one is such a uniquely … ordinary miracle.
It’s not a sudden healing of a skin disease,
or being able to walk after years of being confined to a mat.
It’s not a raising anyone from the dead.

[...]

This catering miracle is more than just everyone being fed,
everyone being welcome and included at the table.

The miracle is also a call to feed.
When they left,
hearts and stomachs full,
that wasn’t the end.

They were sent to feed their neighbors."

"This kind of generational, ongoing, and political trauma is completely overlooked by Luther when he says the excrement that he does,
and in fact, perpetuates negative stereotypes and dehumanizes a people.

The systematic valuation of certain lives over others/
the systematic devaluation of certain lives under others
is not just biblical and historical;
it is present now, and woven into our national founding.
[...]
But as faithful people studying scripture,
endeavoring to follow the will of God,
seeing the divine imprint in each person,
how do we grapple with our various valuations of people based on their positions of power?"

"Fry remarks that 'Sometimes, prioritizing others’ needs pushes fawner to ‘behave outside [their] value system.’ Fawning often requires hiding, shapeshifting, and lying.'
Esther is an expert fawner.
She is a people-pleaser and takes on a helpful persona because she needs to in order to survive.

Because of this, do we really know Esther?

Fry also says,
'Having suffered and experienced trauma does not automatically make one more morally righteous than others. Victims can also be perpetrators. Accountability, even if one is experiencing a trauma response, must always be on the table.'

A trauma-informed lens reveals Esther to be a victim, a victor, and even a villain."

"[The Bible] is full of the stories of our neighbors now,
and we, as God’s children, are called to this time and place to say, “no;”
to end these cycles of abuse and exploitation;
to hold those in power accountable for the well-being, the life and liberty, of all those under their authority, the whole community of earth."

How are we like Queen Vashti-
with fragile privilege?
risking our safety and well-being?
acting with courage?

Vashti is the queen who stands up to unchecked power and says, “no.”
We are called and sent to do the same.

to follow and imitate his ways of truth and life,
of peace and justice for all.
We are called and set free in the washing of the water to be God’s people,
to be the image and being of God to our neighbors.

We are set free to serve in love."

"Jesus looks around.
So.

Faces.
He feels the hunger.
He knows the obstacles people face to just survive,
the challenges to get care basic needs met.
He sees the failures in official leadership to ensure the thriving of the people entrusted to their care.
He hears the cries of despair."

She’s seeking salvation.
And end to the bleeding.

We get to look within ourselves and identify our gifts for offering relief and salvation.

I’ve read that the reason L for le***an comes first in LGBTQIA+ is because it was the le***ans who cared for the gay men dying of AIDS.
When no one else wanted to touch them,
and they were banished to die alone in wards, abandoned by family,
it was the gay women who gave them water to drink, washed their bodies, held them in their last moments.

"It’s been making me think a bit this week
about how many of you, particularly- but not exclusively- women,
said last week during our sermon discussion that you don’t see yourselves as divine.
Completely new concept or idea,
rooted in what so many of us have grown up being told:
that God is divine, and humans are sinners.

Our own beings created in the image of divinity…
meh."
