This unique Nativity was created in 1959 by Mrs. Elsie Stewart, wife of Dr. William A. Stewart. As long-time residents of Watervliet, they were portrayed as pillars of the community and of the First Presbyterian Church, located at 819-23rd St., where they were life long members. Wanting to make something special for the church, she creatively used dolls that their daughters played with as young children and turned them into the members of the Nativity. Each outfit was designed and sewn with love and care. Since there were no dolls of color back in that time, wanting to accurately portray the wise men, she painted one of the dolls. This Nativity was proudly displayed every year since then until the church, sadly, had to close its doors permanently in 2015. It is now available to see at the former North Dutch/Christ Church at 1501 1st Avenue for all to see. This display as well as our annual Christmas display will be open for viewing following the City Tree Lighting on December 4, 2021 and during regular museum hours until January 7, 2022. Stop down to the North Dutch/Christ Church after the Watervliet Tree Lighting Santa is stopping for some cookies and hot chocolate to warm up. He will have gifts or the kids and bells for families. They can leave their Christmas list and get their pictures taken with Santa.
