The final day of the civil rights trip brought us to Tulsa, OK where we visited Greenwood Avenue, the site where the Tulsa massacre occurred in 1921. Once the wealthiest Black community, over 300 people were murdered and their homes & businesses burned to the ground. Never heard of it? Neither had many of us. We also visited Sweet Lisa’s cafe for more good southern cooking before returning home safe & sound.

Day 5 began at the Edmund Pettis Bridge in Selma where we walked the Selma to Montgomery March route civil rights activists took before encountering law enforcement on what became known as Bloody Sunday. We shared in a remembrance of baptism service with a liturgy written by Bishop David Wilson. And we visited 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham where a bomb killed four young girls as injured 22 others. Oh, and JP is looking a little worse for the wear!!

Yes, there were some in Kansas. And we finished at the Legacy Museum. If you aren’t familiar with EJI and Bryan Stevenson, it’s worth looking into what they do.

Day 2 of the Civil Rights trip brought the group to Sun Studio, home of Sun Records. Focusing on recording rhythm and blues artists, it was an important part of the civil rights movement. Thanks to John Paul Johnson for his presentation on how rock and roll music was whitewashed for an audience that would earn more money for white artists and record executives.
