This week's post from the ETC (Engagement Through Communication) team:
As Labor Day approaches, it's a good time to consider how a secular holiday celebrating workers may intersect with our Christian faith. The Bible has much to say about work and the benefits that we receive from our labor. For example, Proverbs 12: 14 states, "the work of their hands brings them reward." And yet, God also models and even commands the importance of rest: "For six days work is to be done, but the seventh day is a day of sabbath rest, holy to the Lord" (Exodus 31:15). This Labor Day, let us appreciate the opportunity to work, give our minds and bodies a chance to honor our creator through rest, and celebrate those in the labor movement who championed our right to do both.

It's that time once again - the school year is about to begin! It's a time of anticipation, excitement, and perhaps more than a little anxiety: Will I like my teacher? Will I make new friends? Will my child thrive in school? Will my students enjoy and learn in my classroom? Keep students, parents, and teachers in your prayers as they embark on the adventure of answering these questions and discovering the endless possibilities of the new school year. And don't forget to slow down and remain vigilant while you're driving as the children head back to school!

This week's post from the ETC (Engagement Through Communication) team:
When lives are at risk, the people who come to help should never be targets. But on August 19th, 2003, a bomb attack killed 23 humanitarian aid workers in Baghdad, Iraq. Sadly, since that deadly attack, humanitarian workers continue to be killed, injured, abducted, detained and obstructed while carrying out their work in crisis zones around the world.The United Nations adopted a resolution in 2008 to designate August 19th as World Humanitarian Day to honor aid workers killed or injured in crisis zones and celebrate all those who risk their lives to help others. Let us always remember the courage demonstrated by aid workers around the world, who embody the selfless love taught by Jesus: "The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep." (John 10:11)

Mays Chapel UMC's mission focus for August is FELT: Feeding Empty Little Tummies. This program provides students in need from Mays Chapel Elementary with food during weekends and school breaks, allowing students to focus on their learning and relieving some financial pressure for their families. The current economic climate is particularly challenging for families, and the number of students who receive food may fluctuate throughout the year as family circumstances change. We praise God for the generous corporate donor who has funded this program and ask for your prayers for the children who receive this blessing.

This Sunday, August 9th is National Book Lovers Day! In an era of short attention spans and ten-second viral video clips, books are magical devices that don't require an internet connection. You can travel to faraway places, even other galaxies. You can travel through time to past ages or distant futures. You can meet great historical figures or ordinary humble people. Best of all, books provide a quiet haven from the stress and noise that surround us every day. This week's post from the ETC (Engagement Through Communication) team:
Back-to-school shopping can be an exciting time for families as the new school year approaches. Sadly, many families struggle to provide basic school supplies for their children. Mays Chapel UMC is proud to assist long-time mission partner Prologue Inc. in helping more than 100 homeless families in Baltimore County obtain such supplies for their pre-K to 12th grade children. How can you help? You can drop off donated supplies at the Mays Chapel UMC office until August 2nd. Although all school supplies are always appreciated, particular needs this year include backpacks, crayons, pencils, glue sticks, and hand sanitizer. If you prefer, you can write a check and let us do the shopping! Just be sure to include "school supplies" in the memo line and drop it off by August 2nd. Let's make the new school year a great one for the children!
