This upcoming month, Muslims around the world will spend a month fasting and praying from sunrise to sundown.

Ramadan carries deep spiritual weight—and for many, social pressure. Those who don’t participate risk exclusion from their communities.

But it’s also a time of spiritual awareness, when hearts are searching for hope. That makes this a powerful moment to pray for God to reveal Himself to those who are searching for hope and salvation.

Throughout Scripture, God invites His people to stand in the gap through prayer. Will you join us?

🎉 A huge thank you to Green's Air Conditioning for coming out this morning to fix the shelter's heater. One thing that can be said is the shelter is always warm and cozy in the cold weather, but this morning our advocates had to improvise when our heater quit. Clients doubled up on blankets and a service call went out. With Green's quick response, we are back to warm and toasty conditions ready to welcome clients back in tonight (and tomorrow night, too, due to the freezing temps forecasted).

❄️ While making the best of the situation, someone said, "Well, it's cold in here, but it is freezing outside." What a great perspective! We love our clients, advocates, donors, supporters, and friends!

🌬 Sometimes life throws us curveballs: extra nights that are necessary for us to open despite budgetary constraint, broken heaters, criticism without support, dwindling supplies - but our community always comes through to help and provide! We wouldn't want to be anywhere but here!

✨️ As the only emergency shelter in the local area for those looking for a safe place to rest for the night, we are happy to be here waiting for those to come in who are seeking refuge from the night.

❤️ There is room for you to join in support of what we do at the shelter. As a 501(c)3 organization, we rely on the support of others and the handful of grants we receive to continue what we do. Check out some of the ways others support and serve the shelter below! ⬇️

✨️ Pray, pray, pray. Pray for those who come to the the shelter and those who haven't found us yet and pray for the advocates, board members, and supporters of the shelter as we continue the work we do at the shelter. Pray for the support for us to expand our operating nights each week until we can be open every night of the week.

What Is the PIT Count (According to HUD)?
The Point‑in‑Time (PIT) Count is a literal count of all people experiencing homelessness in a community on a single night.
Key facts from HUD‑aligned training materials:
• It is conducted nationwide during the last 10 days of January.
• It provides a “snapshot” of homelessness in each community.
• It includes people who are unsheltered, living in places not meant for habitation, and those in emergency shelters or transitional housing (depending on the count type).
• HUD uses PIT data to inform Congress, which then determines funding levels and policy decisions for homelessness programs across the country.
This count is required for every Continuum of Care (CoC) and is one of the most important data tools HUD uses to understand homelessness.
Why You Should Volunteer
Volunteering for the PIT Count is one of the most meaningful ways to support your local homeless community. Here’s why:
1. Your participation directly impacts funding
HUD uses PIT Count data to show Congress the true scope of homelessness, which influences how much money communities receive for housing, outreach, and services.
More accurate counts = more resources for your county.
2. You help ensure no one is overlooked
Volunteers help reach:
• People living in tents
• Individuals in cars
• Those staying in abandoned buildings
• People sleeping outdoors
Your presence helps ensure every person is counted with dignity, which leads to better planning and support.
3. It strengthens community awareness and advocacy
The PIT Count shines a light on the realities of homelessness.
Volunteers become ambas) sadors for truth, helping the community understand the need for compassion, resources, and long‑term solutions.
4. It supports local nonprofits and outreach teams
Organizations like Thomas County CARES rely on volunteers to:
• Conduct surveys
• Distribute supplies
• Connect with individuals who may need services
• Gather accurate data for grants and planning
Your help expands the reach of small teams who cannot cover the entire county alone.
5. It is a powerful act of service
Volunteering for the PIT Count is:
• Safe
• Structured
• Guided by training
• Deeply meaningful
You meet people where they are, offer kindness, and help shape a more compassionate community.
In Short
The PIT Count is a HUD‑mandated, nationwide effort to measure homelessness so communities can receive the funding, services, and support they need.
Volunteers are essential because without them, the data is incomplete—and people go unseen.

🚨 Breaking News!

❄️ Extreme frigid weather is headed our way! We have made plans to open the shelter additional nights Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, Jan. 26-28, 2026 to provide shelter to those looking for a safe, warm place for the night. We always work to have the shelter open and available when temps drop to 32° or below to ensure clients have a safe place to escape the extreme temperatures.

🥣 If you, your church, or organization would like to provide the evening meal or morning take away bags of breakfast food and treats to help get through these cold days, please let us know!

🧦 Warm clothing, socks, gloves, scarves, hats, and hand warmers will be appreciated by those who will face the cold while not with us. Reach out to coordinate a drop-off of supplies you may have.

❤️ Extra nights incur extra costs to our budget. Please consider making a financial contribution to help! There is still room for you to join in supporting what we do at the shelter. As a 501(c)3 organization, we rely on the support of others and the handful of grants we receive to continue what we do. Check out some of the ways others support and serve the shelter below! ⬇️
