COMING SOON! New York Blood Center (NYBC) will once again partner with Riverdale Temple in giving back to the community by inspiring blood donation. The event, on Wednesday, June 24, from 1:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Riverdale Temple Social Hall, comes at a critical time as NYBC recently declared a blood emergency, with all blood types desperately needed as we have already entered the summer "trauma season." Upcoming major events, including the FIFA World Cup, have raised concerns about blood supply levels, with blood donations down nearly 15%.

Blood cannot be manufactured and has a limited shelf life, meaning hospitals rely on a steady stream of donors to meet daily demand. A blood emergency means the available supply has dropped below safe levels to meet routine and urgent patient needs. For trauma centers, where patients may require large volumes of blood within minutes, maintaining an adequate supply is critical for patient care.

It only takes one hour to donate, and a single donation can save multiple lives. Roughly one in seven hospital admissions require a blood transfusion. Those in need include: cancer patients, accident, burn, or trauma victims, newborn babies and their mothers, transplant recipients, surgery patients, chronically transfused patients suffering from sickle cell disease or thalassemia, and many more.

To make an appointment for this blood drive, donors can call 1-800-933-2566 or visit https://donate.nybc.org/donor/schedules/drive_schedule/333078.

Riverdale Temple is located at 4545 Independence Avenue, Bronx, NY 10471.

DON'T MISS THIS!

Dear Friends,

Thanks for another great discussion on the 6th. Our next meeting on Zoom is coming right up on Wednesday evening, May 27 at 7:30 pm.

We will be discussing, at Dr. Ronna Weber’s suggestion, BEING JEWISH AFTER THE DESTRUCTION OF GAZA: A Reckoning by Peter Beinart.

The book is a New York Times “Notable Book” as well as NY Times bestseller. The author puts forth a provocative argument challenging readers to “reckon with the demands of justice, equity, and accountability in the face of one of the most consequential and divisive issues of our time.” — Judges’ Citation, PEN/John Kenneth Galbraith Award for Nonfiction

This promises to be an important and lively discussion; I urge anyone who is interested in the topic to join us. We welcome everyone.

Best,
Ronni

TONIGHT AT 7:30PM EDT! What makes music “Jewish”? On Tuesday, May 5 from 7:30pm to 9:15pm on Zoom, the Riverdale Temple Adult Education Committee will host a talk by composer Alex Weiser, titled “WHAT IS JEWISH MUSIC?”

In this talk, Weiser discusses his evolving understanding of the concept of “Jewish music” and the category of the “Jewish composer.”

Beginning with his musical training, Weiser will trace his engagement with Yiddish language, archives, and stories, situating his work as a composer within longer traditions of Jewish art music from the Society for Jewish Folk Music to contemporary postminimalism.

Drawing on his song cycles as well as his operas, including 'The Great Dictionary of the Yiddish Language,' he will consider his work through the lens of the Jewish intellectual traditions they engage.

Registration is required to attend the event, and once registered, you will be emailed a Zoom link to join the discussion at the email address used to register.

WEDNESDAY EVENING!

Friends,

The next meeting of the WRJ Book Club will take place on Zoom on Wednesday, May 6 (rescheduled from April 29) at 7:30pm.

The book under discussion will be THIS IS NOT ABOUT US by Allegra Goodman.

“Wise, witty . . . a deliciously readable book [about] the delicate minutiae of family life, played beautifully, boldly, brightly in a major key.”—The New York Times Book Review (Editors’ Choice)

“Goodman’s mature and deftly written book suggests that, in family as in art, there is no such thing as uncomplicated happiness.”—The Wall Street Journal

Thank you for the engaging discussion of WORLD OF OUR FATHERS; we’re looking forward to seeing you at our next meeting.

Ronni
