Antisemitic hate crimes made up 57% of all reported hate crimes in NYC last year, but Jewish people make up only about 10% of NYC’s population.

The legislative package from is urgently needed and would help ensure safe access to synagogues, schools, and other houses of worship while protecting the right to peaceful protest.

In-person event.

Lecture by Benjamin Marcus

On Purim we read Megillat Esther. And on Passover – always 30 days later – we read Song of Songs. Both holidays mark crucial events of our redemption by G-d from imminent genocidal annihilation by the rulers of our exilic host nations. But the stories we read could not be more different in tenor from the events we make it a duty to remember, and they could not be more different from each other in their narrative structures.

Come on March 18 to see the how these differences were addressed in the two illustrated megillot that fellow congregant Benjamin Marcus has produced as he presents his own visual interpretations in a short talk about the work.

“Restoring Faith in Democracy Through Civic Spirit”

Pre-Purim lecture by Marc Ashley

February 25 at 7:00 pm (Zoom only).

The frivolity of Purim masks its menacing context. Megillat Esther, which we may read lightheartedly, describes an embattled Jewish community at risk of extermination. Yet the Megillah also insightfully and provocatively encapsulates a fierce ancient debate – with obvious contemporary resonance – about the status, identity and future of Jews in the Diaspora, far from their ancestral homeland. It is a thoroughly Diaspora-centric story, set within the milieu of the mighty Persian empire, with little regard for conventional Jewish themes, practices and beliefs –including, stunningly, not a single reference to God. It centrally frames a pivotal question with increasing relevance and urgency for disquieted Jews in today’s unsettling world: Are we better off living in the Diaspora or Israel? Depending on one’s perspective, Megillat Esther’s answer may be comforting, confounding or chilling. The issues it raises are certainly timely and consequential.

Please join congregant Marc Ashley for an intriguing discussion of an often misunderstood and underappreciated classic Jewish text.

TOMORROW:
Zayin Adar Program
Dinner is cancelled, but you can join the program on Zoom.
When Moses ascended Har Nebo, he was probably not thinking of the possibility of snow on his yahrzeit, but alas, we need to contend with the realities of a Nor’easter.

To be safe, we have cancelled the dinner for tomorrow night, but so far, the (nationwide) program we were joining, with Kavod v’Nichum, is on. If you want to join the program, which will include the screening of the short film The Secret Society, please click the link in our story.
