WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS Rev. Dr. Jeff Binder

INTROIT “I Call You to Praise”
by John G. Elliott © 1989 BMG Songs, Inc. & Pamela Kay Music

WORDS OF PRAISE Iona Abbey Worship Book Robin Knott
The world belongs to God,
the earth and all its people.
How good it is, how wonderful,
to live together in unity.
Love and faith come together,
justice and peace join hands.
If Christ’s disciples keep silent
these stones would shout aloud.
Open our lips, O God,
and our mouths shall proclaim your praise.

*OPENING HYMN #8 “Eternal Father, Strong to Save”

*OPENING PRAYER
God of grace, love, and communion, we confess that we have failed to love you with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love our neighbor as
ourselves.
We ignore your commandments, stray from your way, and follow other gods.
Have mercy upon us. Forgive our sin and raise us to new life so that we may serve you rightfully and give honor to your holy name.

*ASSURANCE OF GOD’S GRACE 2 Corinthians 5:17
Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation.
The old life has gone; a new life has begun.
In Christ Jesus we are made anew; we are made free!
Thanks be to God!

*PASSING OF THE PEACE
The peace of Christ be with you.
And also with you.

*RESPONSE OF PRAISE #447 “We Are Forgiven”

SCRIPTURE READING 1 Peter 5
This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God!

ANTHEM “Humble King”

SERMON “Tending the Flock” Rev. Dr. Jeff Binder

*HYMN OF RESPONSE #661 “Why Should I Feel Discouraged?”

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH A Proposed New Confession for the PC(USA) Unison
Before us, beneath us, beyond us, ever creating,
God breathes life into all that is, rejoicing in its abundant goodness.
All of creation sings praise to God.
As members of this wondrous creation, made in God’s image and likeness,
humanity echoes the overflowing and boundless love of the Creator.
Each of us, all of us—of every race, culture, language, nation,
ability, gender, and affection—are called to manifest God's image and likeness:
in our love for God, in our love for neighbors and strangers as ourselves,
and in loving communion with all creation.

WORDS OF PRAISE Psalm 116 selected verses Martha Tillen
I love the Lord
because he has heard my voice and my supplications.
Because God inclined his ear to me,
therefore I will call on the Lord as long as I live.
What shall I return to the Lord for all God’s bounty to me?
I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord;
I will pay my vows to the Lord in the presence of all God’s people.
Praise the Lord!

*OPENING HYMN #462 “I Love to Tell the Story”

*OPENING PRAYER
Searcher of hearts, you have known us from the beginning. You see in us more good and beauty than we have dared to believe. Forever you call us by name.
But we have filled our lives with the sounds of the world. We have not loved and sought you with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength.
Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy.
Reveal to us once more your love and mercy through this, our act of worship.

*ASSURANCE OF GOD’S GRACE
The good news is that Christ calls us to new life and enables us to begin again in grace and love.
Friends, believe the good news of the gospel: in Jesus Christ we are forgiven!
Thanks be to God!
*PASSING OF THE PEACE
The peace of Christ be with you.
And also with you.

*HYMN OF RESPONSE #450 “Be Thou My Vision”

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Apostles’ Creed (Traditional) Unison
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he
ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints;
the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
