Jesuits USA Central and Southern

Jesuits USA Central and Southern The Society of Jesus, also known as Jesuits, is a religious order of priests and brothers in the Roman Catholic Church. Founded by St. We find God in All Things.

Ignatius Loyola in 1540, our mission is the service of faith and the promotion of justice. We are the Society of Jesus, a Roman Catholic order of priests and brothers founded half a millennium ago by the courtier-turned-mystic Ignatius Loyola. With close to 18,000 priests and brothers worldwide, we are the largest male religious order in the Catholic Church. We are pastors, teachers, and chaplains

. We are also doctors, lawyers, and astronomers, among many other roles in Church and society. We refer to ourselves as the Jesuits of the USA Central and Southern Province, one group within the Society of Jesus in the United States and one part of the worldwide body of Jesuits. Jesuits draw on the rich tradition of Ignatian spirituality and reflection. In our retreat houses, parishes, campus ministries, and other settings, we offer these resources to all who want to discern God’s presence in their lives. At the same time, we also aim to be “contemplatives in action,” people who bring this spirituality into the wide world. That includes our work on behalf of global justice, peace, and dialogue. In our varied ministries, we care for the whole person: body, mind, and soul. And especially in our education ministries, we seek to nurture "men and women for others."

Pope Leo's powerful new encyclical invites each of us into a conversation about how to be most fully human in a world where AI is growing at an unchecked rate, elite and non-state actors control data, and the common good is not prioritized.

Kim Daniels, JD, from Georgetown University, Scott Hurd from Catholic Charities USA, Nichole Flores, PhD, from the University of Virginia, and Paul Scherz, PhD, from the University of Notre Dame, will help us to consider deeper questions about our relationships with God, each other, creation and technology.

Join the Jesuits of Canada and the United States Office of Justice and Ecology, the Ignatian Solidarity Network, and Catholic and religious partner organizations for a webinar on Pope Leo XIV's new encyclical.

Jesuit regent Reynaldo Belfort Pierrilus, SJ, assists in young adult ministry at the Centro Universitario Católico (CUC – Catholic University Center) at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras campus.

Students from the center joined with close to 100 college students from all over Puerto Rico for the Encuentro Nacional de Pastorales Universitarias Católicas on May 17. Their goal is to create a collaborative network between Catholic student groups across college campuses. Around 14 public and private university campuses from all over the island were represented.

It was a historic event, as the last time such a gathering occurred was more than 20 years ago. Auxiliary Bishop Thomás González (Diocese of San Juan) was present for most of the event, along with some representatives of religious orders and Catholic entrepreneurs. Many students reported they felt gratitude and joy for such space as they came together for prayer, communal dialog and fellowship in the Lord. Please pray for the continued renewal of young adult ministry in Puerto Rico!

Fr. Arturo M. Sosa, Superior General of the Society of Jesus, released a letter to Jesuit major superiors on ministry with young people on Pentecost Sunday. In it, Fr. Sosa reiterates the Universal Apostolic Preferences' commitment to walking with young people to a hope-filled future and calls for a “new intensity, coherence, and depth” in Jesuit work with young adults.

“Our apostolates are privileged spaces of encounter with the young”, says Fr Sosa, “and Ignatian spirituality finds a natural resonance in their daily lives.”

Through this accompaniment, he continues,
"The Society of Jesus works across cultures and continents with an apostolic boldness that comes from the Spirit of the Risen Jesus. Our closeness to Him moves us beyond the closed doors of our fears and transforms us into people of courage, who bring healing and hope."

Father Anthony J. Corcoran, SJ, apostolic administrator for the small Catholic community in Kyrgyzstan since 2017, has recently been elevated to the office of bishop by Pope Leo XIV.

Father Corcoran has served in Russia and Central Asia for over two decades, giving his all to the pastoral care of Kyrgyz Catholics. Despite the declining numbers, the Church remains vibrant, Bishop-elect Corcoran said, with a notable number of social and educational activities.

After learning the news that he would be made a bishop, Fr. Corcoran said:

"I pray that this decision of the Church to call me to the episcopacy may truly encourage and strengthen the faithful and serve for the common good of this society."

“Father Anthony is simply one of the most extraordinary priests that I have known and is a continual inspiration to me, as he is to countless others. As is the case with truly saintly people, he is completely unaware of how powerfully the Lord works through him! Everyone who knows him is struck by his modesty and unassuming character, which cannot disguise his brilliance and spiritual depth,” Monsignor Greg Adolf said of Fr. Anthony Corcoran, SJ, who was named a bishop last week.
