Feast of our Lady of Sorrows - In 1839 Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat consecrated the Society of the Sacred Heart to Our Lady of Sorrows and, subsequently, many houses of the Society were dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows throughout the 19th and 20th century. The consecration prayer used by Sophie in 1839 was said every year in all houses of the Society well into the 1960s. The International Day of Charity was established with the objective of sensitizing and mobilizing people, NGOs, and stakeholders all around the world to help others through volunteer and philanthropic activities. September 5th was chosen to commemorate the passing of Mother Teresa, who received the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize for work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress, which also constitute a threat to peace. The Giving Fund is a $10 million fundraising initiative that provides the financing that sustains the ministries of the the Religious of the Sacred Heart and plans for the future care of their elderly sisters. Oakwood is an RSCJ retirement residence offering multiple levels of care and dedicated staff support. Many sisters remain active in ministry while enjoying community life, activities, and outings. The Westwood renovation will modernize the independent living area with updated infrastructure, improved lighting and plumbing, renovated bedrooms with private bathrooms, and enhanced shared spaces.
