God’s first commandment is simple: “You shall have no other gods before me.” It deals with our worship and loyalty. We are to have no other gods, but why does what seems a simple given become temptation to abandon Him?

Do you enjoy good fiction? Several members of Exodus do, so much so that they formed a Book Club this summer…and just kept reading. Meeting the first Saturday night of each month, the group just finished its second book of the fall, with two left between now and the end of the year.

Book Club’s November 7th book is One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Alexander Solzhenitsyn, with December 5th’s selection being Theo of Golden by Allen Levi. Order or check out your copy, read it, and make plans now to attend either or both upcoming gatherings. Tasty book-themed goodies are always served, and the insights and discussions are always rich.

A good time was had by all at Saturday's 3rd annual Exodus at Irish Road Farm campfire and cookout. For some, The 10 Commandments are a ladder they feel compelled to climb; for others, a cage they feel limits their freedom. But in each case (and a few others), we miss the point of the commandments without knowing the God Who gave them (and why) in the first place.

This Sunday, we begin a new sermon series from Exodus 20. But before we get to the commandments, Ruling Elder Craig Dunham will help us consider Exodus 19 and “The God of the Ten Words.” After all, before God gave His people the law, He gave them Himself.

The book of Jonah ends on an odd note with little resolution to our sermon series on Jonah, with Jonah sitting and sulking in rage over God’s mercy shown to the undeserving Ninevites.

This Sunday, as Pastor Stephen concludes from Jonah 4:1-11, he’ll ask us two key questions. Is it ever right to question God’s decisions to dispense mercy? And what about to whom (and when) He gives it?

Teaching kids to engage with culture as part of our Kids Book Club. Helping them observe, affirm, or challenge what is/isn’t true, good, or beautiful and acting out scenes from a story is all part of the fun.

This Communion Sunday, as part of our continuing sermon series (Jonah: A Prophet in Need of Mercy), we’ll hear how Jonah gets a fresh start to obey God in Jonah 3:1-10. And, he is even successful in his preaching among the Ninevites as they repent and God relents!

But how will Jonah deal with this? Will he be happy they receive mercy as he did himself...or not?

God saves Jonah’s life through a great fish, but we get a sense of Jonah’s desperation and despair before he turns to God for deliverance. By miraculous mercy, God takes Jonah low before making it possible to ascend — a reminder that to be humbled is part of God’s love in lifting us up to be saved.
