Prelude: Where Love Is Found
English folk tune/Biery

Welcome & Call to Worship
[Psalm 145]

The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
The Lord is good to all, and his compassion is over all that he has made.
The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.
The Lord upholds all who are falling, and raises up all who are bowed down.
Let us worship the LORD!

Holy, Holy, Holy
Heber/Dykes

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee;
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore Thee,
Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee
Who wert and art, and evermore shall be.

Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide Thee,
Though the eye of sinfulness Thy glory may not see,
Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee
Perfect in power, in love and purity.

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All Thy works shall praise Thy name, in earth and sky and sea;
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

Confession

Jesus, you prayed that your followers would all be one, as you are united with the Spirit and the Father. You made us to live in open fellowship with you and one another and to show your glory to the world. Forgive us when we receive your blessings but fail to share those blessings with others. Forgive us when what the world sees in us is not love or unity. Help us connect ever more deeply to you, and teach us to be a community where people can experience your radical love. Amen.

Great God, Your Love Has Called Us Here
Wren/St. Catherine

Great God, in Christ You set us free Your life to live, Your joy to share.
Give us Your Spirit’s liberty to turn from guilt and dull despair
And offer all that faith can do while love is making all things new.

Peace
The peace of Christ be with you.
And also with you.

Sovereign Lord of All Creation
Cross/PLEADING SAVIOR, American folk melody

Sovereign Lord of all creation, Ground of being, life and love;
Height and depth beyond description only life in You can prove:
You are mortal life’s dependence: thought, speech, sight are ours by grace;
Yours is every hour’s existence, Sovereign Lord of time and space.

Jesus Christ, the One for others, we, Your people, make our prayer:
Help us love as sisters, brothers, all whose burdens we can share.
Where Your name binds us together, You, Lord Christ, will surely be;
Where no selfishness can sever, there Your love the world may see.

Holy Spirit, rushing, burning Wind and flame of Pentecost,
Fire our hearts afresh with yearning to regain what we have lost.
May Your love unite our action. Nevermore to speak alone:
God, in us abolish faction, God, through us Your love make known.

Sermon: Love That Forms a People
Scott Starbuck

Theme: Love creates a community for the world

Response: O Christ, the Great Foundation (Hymn 443)
Lew/Wesley

O Christ, the great foundation on which your people stand
To preach your true salvation in every age and land:
Pour out your Holy Spirit to make us strong and pure,
To keep the faith unbroken as long as worlds endure.

Baptized in one confession, one church in all the earth,
We bear our Lord’s impression, the sign of second birth:
One holy people gathered in love beyond our own,
By grace we were invited, by grace we make you known.

Pastoral Prayer & The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, and deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Call to Stewardship

Now the whole group of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one claimed private ownership of any possessions, but everything they owned was held in common.

Sending: In Christ There Is No East or West
Oxenham/Reinagle

In Christ there is no east or west, in him no south or north;
But one great fellowship of love throughout the whole wide earth.

In Christ shall true hearts everywhere their high communion find;
His service is the golden cord close-binding humankind.

Join hands, disciples of the faith, whate’er your race may be.
All children of the living God are surely kin to me.

In Christ now meet both east and west, in him meet south and north;
All Christly souls are one in him throughout the whole wide earth.

Prelude: We Pray Now to the Holy Spirit
Buxtehude

Welcome & Call to Worship

The wind of God blows across the waters; the breath of God gives life to the world!
Come, Holy Spirit, and fill our hearts with Your light!
On this Pentecost morning, God pours out the Holy Spirit upon all flesh.
We come to be ignited by Your truth and united WITH Your love.
On this Memorial Day weekend, we also remember those who gave their lives in service.
We bring our grief, our gratitude, and our deep longing for Your peace.
In a world fractured by war and divisions, the Comforter stands right WITH US.
You are with us in our memories, our losses, and our brightest hopes.
Let us worship the God who binds our wounds and breathes new life into our souls!
Let us worship the God whose BEING is WITH US!

Come Down, O Love Divine
Bianco da Siena/Williams

Come down, O Love divine, seek out this soul of mine
And visit it with Your own ardor glowing;
O comforter, draw near, within my heart appear,
And kindle it, Your holy flame bestowing.

O let it freely burn, till earthly passions turn
To dust and ashes in its heat consuming;
And let Your glorious light shine ever on my sight,
And clothe me round, the while my path illuming.

And so the yearning strong with which the soul will long
Shall far outpass the power of human telling;
For none can guess God’s grace, till Love creates a place
Wherein the Holy Spirit makes a dwelling.

Confession

Merciful God, we confess that we often fail to recognize Your presence WITH US. You promise to never leave us nor forsake us; yet, we live as though we are completely on our own. Lord, on this Memorial Day weekend, we also confess our short memories as we take for granted the freedoms we have in our life and faith bought by the sacrifices of others while we easily ignore the brokenness of war. Help us to become peacemakers. Awaken our hearts to the reality of Your constant love that is WITH US. Comfort those who carry the heavy burden of loss this weekend. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Until this earthly part of me glows with Thy fire divine.

Spirit of the Living God
Iverson

Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me;
Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.
Melt me, mold me, fill me, use me.
Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.

Spirit of the living God, move among us all;
Make us one in heart and mind, make us one in love.
Humble, caring, selfless, sharing –
Spirit of the living God, move among us all.

Sermon
Rev. Pamela Starbuck
Focus: Love is “being with.”

Response: How Deep the Father’s Love
Townend

How deep the Father's love for us, how vast beyond all measure
That He should give His only Son to make a wretch His treasure.
How great the pain of searing loss. The Father turns His face away
as wounds which mar the chosen One bring many sons to glory.

Behold the Man upon a cross, my sin upon His shoulders.
Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice call out among the scoffers.
It was my sin that held Him there until it was accomplished;
His dying breath has brought me life; I know that it is finished.

I will not boast in anything: no gifts, no power, no wisdom.
But I will boast in Jesus Christ: His death and resurrection.
Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer.
But this I know with all my heart: His wounds have paid my ransom.

We are one in the Spirit; we are one in the Lord;
And we pray that all unity may one day be restored.

And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love;
Yes, they’ll know we are Christians by our love.

We will walk with each other; we will walk hand in hand;
We will walk with each other; we will walk hand in hand;
And together we’ll spread the news that God is in our land.

We will work with each other; we will work side by side;
And we’ll guard each one’s dignity and save each one’s pride.

Prelude: “Your Love Is Everlasting”
Gastorius, arr. Burkhardt

Welcome & Call to Worship
[Psalm 136]

O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.
Who by understanding made the heavens, for his steadfast love endures forever;
Who spread out the earth on the waters, for his steadfast love endures forever;
It is he who remembered us in our low estate, for his steadfast love endures forever.
Let us worship the LORD!

We Thank You, Lord, for You Are Good (Hymn 243)
Dunn/Gastorius

We thank You, Lord, for You are good; Your mercy lives forever.
Your kindness from of old has stood; Your love will keep us ever.
O God of gods, O sovereign Lord, we bless You now with one accord:
Your love is everlasting.

You, Lord, alone did wondrous deeds; Your mercy lives forever.
From You alone all good proceeds; Your love will keep us ever.
Your wisdom made the heavens to be; You formed the earth above the sea:
Your love is everlasting.

You made the starry lights to rise; Your mercy lives forever.
Your glories shine in radiant skies; Your love will keep us ever.
Your glowing moon enhances night. Your sun brings forth each mornings’ light:
Your love is everlasting.

You rescue us from every foe; Your mercy lives forever.
You feed Your creatures here below; Your love will keep us ever.
We give You thanks, Creator, Lord, we sing the glories of your Word.
Your love is everlasting.

[Psalm 136]

Confession

God our Creator, your commitment to your people follows us through many challenges and blessings. Forgive us when we do not take time to remember and reflect on the evidence of your love in our lives and our history. Forgive us when we value temporary gifts, knowledge, or achievements more than love. Empty us of fear and shame, and fill us with love that is humble and patient and kind. Give us hope and endurance as we commit again to the process of loving. Amen.

Sending: Though I May Speak (Hymn 335)
Hopson/English folk melody

Though I may speak with bravest fire, and have the gift to all inspire,
And have not love, my words are vain; as sounding brass, and hopeless gain.

Though I may give all I possess, and striving so my love profess,
But not be given by love within, the profit soon turns strangely thin.

Come, Spirit, come, our hearts control, our spirits long to be made whole.
Let inward love guide every deed; by this we worship and are freed.

Prelude: Cantilene on Ubi Caritas
Callahan

(Ubi Caritas is an ancient Latin hymn, translated as “Where charity and love are, God is there.” It is a hymn of Christian love and community, often used during the washing of feet on Maundy Thursday.)

Welcome & Call to Worship
[Isaiah 58]

This is the fast God chooses: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke.
This is a day acceptable to the Lord: to share our bread with the hungry, to house the homeless, to cover the naked, and to care for our families.
When we do these things, our light shall break forth like the dawn, and our healing shall spring up quickly.
Then we shall call, and the Lord will answer; we shall cry for help, and he will say, Here I am.
Let us worship the LORD!

O Praise the Gracious Power
Troeger/Doran

O praise the gracious power that tumbles walls of fear
And gather in one house of faith all strangers far and near:
We praise You, Christ! Your cross has made us one!

O praise inclusive love, encircling every race,
Oblivious to gender, wealth, to social rank or place:
We praise You, Christ! Your cross has made us one!

O praise the word of faith that claims us as God’s own,
A living temple built on Christ, our rock and cornerstone:
We praise You, Christ! Your cross has made us one!

O praise the living Christ with faith’s bright songful voice!
Announce the gospel to the world and with these words rejoice:
We praise You, Christ! Your cross has made us one!

Confession

Lord Jesus, you surprised your disciples with the humble service of washing their feet. As humans in imperfect bodies, forgive us when we are impatient with our physical needs or think less of those who take jobs with these basic but necessary tasks. Forgive us when we try to care for someone’s spiritual needs without paying attention to physical needs that affect their situation. You set an example of love free from pride or class expectations that welcomes our bodies as well as our minds. Help us follow your example to love one another. Amen.

Where Charity and Love Prevail
8th cent. Latin/Chapin

Where charity and love prevail, there God is ever found;
Brought here together by Christ’s love, by love we thus are bound.

Let us recall that in our midst dwells Christ, God’s holy Son.
As members of each body joined, in him we are made one.

Let us forgive each other’s faults as we our own confess,
That we may love each other well in Christian gentleness.

Love can exclude no race or creed if honored be God’s name;
Our common life embraces all whose Maker is the same.

Sending: Lord, Whose Love Through Humble Service
Bayly/BEACH SPRING

Lord, whose love through humble service bore the weight of human need,
Who upon the cross, forsaken, offered mercy’s perfect deed,
We, Your servants, bring the worship not of voice alone, but heart,
Consecrating to Your purpose every gift that You impart.

Still your children wander homeless; still the hungry cry for bread;
Still the captives long for freedom; still in grief we mourn our dead.
As, O Lord, Your deep compassion healed the sick and freed the soul,
Use the love Your Spirit kindles still to save and make us whole.

Called from worship to Your service, forth in Your dear name we go,
To the child, the youth, the aged, love in living deeds to show;
Hope and health, goodwill and comfort, counsel, aid, and peace we give,
That Your servants, Lord, in freedom may Your mercy know and live.
