The Truth of God

What is truth? Various generations have had different ways of answering that question. It's a popular belief in today’s culture that truth can be whatever you want it to be. This is the idea that truth is relative & unique to every individual person.

But if everyone lives their own truth, then nobody can truly know which 1 is right. If 1 person’s truth contradicts another person’s truth, 1 of them must be wrong.

Scripture tells us that there's an objective truth available; a truth that we can live by. Rather than truth being grounded in the individual, it's grounded in something much bigger than ourselves. Truth is sourced from God.

God's the Creator & Ruler of the universe & everything that exists & the 1 from whom truth & beauty come. God’s Word contains the truths that He has spoken to us—so that we might live according to His truth & His ways.

Jesus says that His teachings are true because they come from God. He goes on to say that anyone who knows the truth of God will be set free in their life.

When we know the truth, we're no longer living according to a lie. God’s Word tells us the truth & leads us to life. This is why Jesus says that the truth will set us free. That's when we become truly free to live according to how God designed us to live.

An important part of learning what's true & what isn’t is reading God’s Word. He"s spoken to us through His Word & all that He has spoken is true. When we read & memorize God’s Word, we learn more & more about God.

Take some time today to thank God for revealing Himself to us through His Word & for illuminating our lives w/ His truth.

Contending for the Faith

Save others by sn**ching them from the fire; �to others show mercy, mixed with fear. Jude 1:23

Today's Scripture Jude 1:20-23

A 27year-old student studying in Japan had to be rescued from Mount Fuji twice in 1 week! After being airlifted during his 1st climb due to dangerous conditions, he realized he’d left his phone & other belongings behind. 4 days later, ignoring warnings, he returned to the mountain, only to need to be rescued again—this time suffering from altitude sickness. His story made headlines for its rarity but also because he’d knowingly trekked back into danger.

This account mirrors a spiritual reality—we often tend to head back to what God has rescued us from. Jude captures this tension in his little letter. Written to a church threatened by false teachers & moral compromises, he exhorted believers “to contend for the faith” (1:3), not just for themselves but for others too. Jude challenged them to sn**ch others “from the fire” (v. 23)—taking an active role in shielding struggling believers from false teachers. As believers in Jesus, we can’t simply stand back & watch others flounder & fail.

Today, God is calling us to rescue others & to resist returning to the place we were rescued from. His grace will rescue us more than once, but it also calls us to live like we’ve already been rescued. Through God’s strength, let’s contend for the faith & help others be built up in the “most holy faith” (v. 20).

The Place to Start

There are many places we can go to learn about something new, or to grow in wisdom & knowledge. Books are full of access to insightful information. The internet is overloaded w/ both helpful & unhelpful content about any subject imaginable.

While those are great places to start, Scripture tells us that the foundation of all knowledge is a healthy fear of the Lord. This means that while we can learn things from anyone, the beginning of true wisdom always begins w/ God.

The fear of the Lord doesn’t necessarily mean that you should be afraid of God. It means that we should live our lives in awe of Him. We do this by recognizing who He is—the Creator & Sustainer of all things. He's all-powerful & all-knowledgeable. God’s Word says He holds the power of life & death in His hands. These attributes should cause us to live in awe of God.

Scripture also tells us that God is loving, gracious & merciful. Even though we—His own creation—previously rebelled against Him, God graciously gave us access back to Himself through His Son, Jesus. The God who created the universe loves each & every 1 of us. He loves you.

Living in awe of who God is & what He's done is the beginning of all wisdom & knowledge. We would be foolish to turn away from such a powerful & gracious God.

While we can learn a lot about many different things through books, people & the internet, the most essential & important piece of knowledge about God comes from His Word.

Spend some time w/ God in His Word & in prayer—thanking Him for who He is & what He's done for you. Begin a habit of reading Scripture regularly so that you can know, respect & trust Him in a deeper way.

Let us throw off everything that hinders �and the sin that so easily entangles. Hebrews 12:1

Today's Scripture Hebrews 12:1-7, 10, 14

My smartphone occasionally reminds me I’m not good at digital housekeeping. “Junk files are taking up space,” the message reads. “Delete 675MB of junk files.” Now, I dislike being nagged by my phone. But if I clean out those files, I’ve got more space for things that really matter. Then, when I’m at my daughter’s swim meet, for instance, I’ll have enough digital storage to actually shoot a video of her winning a race instead of unexpectedly realizing that those pesky “junk files” have sabotaged my ability to capture the moment.

Junk files on our phones are easy to delete. But what about the “junk files” in our souls? Like our phones, our souls can be clogged w/ stuff that keeps us from flourishing spiritually. The author of Hebrews understood this reality, encouraging us to pay close attention to anything that trips us up in our walk w/ God. “Let us throw off everything that hinders & the sin that so easily entangles,” he writes, followed by this challenge: “Let us run w/ perseverance the race marked out for us” (Hebrews 12:1).

What weighs you down? What trips you up? Hebrews encourages us to fix “our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer & perfecter of faith” (v. 2), who alone can help us identify & delete the “junk files” that hinder our abundant life in Him.

God Our Rock

There are 100's of different names & titles for God throughout Scripture. Since the Psalms are written from various seasons of life, there are many different perspectives of how God acts w/in those seasons.

Psalm 18 is written at a time when the author, King David, was delivered from his enemies by God. In this Psalm, David almost immediately calls God his rock, because God was dependable & stable. There was nothing that could overtake God or move Him. This truth wasn't just for David, but for anyone who relies on God.

When we belong to God, He's a rock & a fortress for us as well. Everything in the world is constantly shifting, but we belong to a God who never changes. He's our protection from things that might seek to harm us.

We belong to a God who can protect us throughout our lives. Even if we don’t have physical enemies, we can run to God when life gets difficult. That’s why, like David, our response to God should be filled w/ praise. We need to remember what God has done—so we can praise Him for who He is.

Take some time today to thank God for how He's led & protected you so far in your life. If you’re currently in a difficult season, run to God & ask Him for help. He's able & willing to be your rock.

The Ultimate Snapshot

Today's Scripture Corinthians 4:7-18

Before our trip to Switzerland, my mental snapshot was of snowy Alps, goats grazing & mountain farmers blowing alpine horns. However, as we drove south from Zurich, the landscape was the same drab tangle of highways we saw in any city. When we got close to our lodging, we had to drive up a precarious 1-lane dirt road. At our rental place, we hauled our suitcases up steep stone stairways. Exhausted & disappointed, we finally made our way onto the patio. There, opening up before us, stretched an extraordinary vista: the Alps rising up majestically over the blue expanse of Lake Lucerne, w/ small towns glittering like fireflies below us. The ordeal was worth it.

I recalled the verse, “Therefore we don't lose heart” (2 Corinthians 4:16). The apostle Paul writes of his own struggles: “We're hard pressed on every side, but . . . not in despair” (v. 8). He reveals his positive outlook: “Our light & momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all” (v. 17). He advises us to “fix our eyes . . . on what is unseen” (v. 18), to hope for that eternal landscape.

Sometimes our journey is drab & difficult. But in Christ, we’re assured that we’ll witness the ultimate snapshot. The ordeal will be worth it: His eternal glory far surpasses anything we can imagine.
