In Plato’s “Republic”, he asks if a person would choose to do what is right if they could get away with doing what is wrong. The point he makes gives us the idea that the measure of a person’s character is what they do with power.

Paul talks about freedom and our use of power to frame this ethically suggesting we should use our power to love and serve others (Gal 5:13).

Everyday we have choices about how to use our power, and specifically our personhood. Will we use our life force to push people down or help people up?

Jeremiah consistently makes The. Most. Important. Turn.

The turn towards God.

Through every battle.
In every hardship.
When things got tough.
When things seemed to have come to an end.

Jeremiah turned to God.

Jeremiah learned two things:
1) He’s not alone.
2) He doesn’t have to the weight alone.

God is there to help.

If you need help this week.
There’s one place you can turn.
The only place big enough to receive all you’ve been carrying.

It’s Saturday.

For some people, it’s a day of rest. For others, it’s a day of errands, work, sports, and endless to-do lists.

Whatever your day holds, consider this challenge:

It’s easy to love the people who agree with us, support us, and make life easier. The harder task—and perhaps the more Christlike one—is loving the people who disappoint us, frustrate us, or even hurt us.

As one writer put it: “The true test of Christianity isn’t loving Jesus, it’s loving Judas.”

Love is most powerful when it’s given where it’s least expected.

May God give us the courage today to show kindness, extend grace, and see others through the eyes of Christ.

If you’re someone who rolls your eyes at Juneteenth, I get it.

For many people, it can feel like just another holiday added to the calendar. But Juneteenth is actually about something most Americans agree is worth celebrating: freedom.

On June 19, 1865, enslaved people in Texas were finally informed that they were free. Juneteenth marks that moment.

You don’t have to agree with every political argument surrounding race in America to recognize that the end of slavery was a good thing. You don’t have to share the same views on every issue to appreciate a day that remembers freedom, justice, and human dignity.

At its heart, Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom delayed, but freedom finally realized.

That seems like something worth remembering.

Grateful for the welcome, friendship, and hospitality of Poulsbo First Lutheran Church. We were here touring after worship today and got to meet some fine friends preparing meals for a Sunday evening ministry. It is such a gift to get to know some of the people at this beautiful church ⛪️
