Merciful Lord, we confess that we have defined righteousness by the company we keep, drawing careful circles to mark who is in and who is out, and thanking you that we are on the right side of the line. We confess that we have sought sacrifice over mercy — the performance of religion without its heart, the right words without the love they were meant to carry, and attendance without attention. You come to call sinners, not the righteous. And so you have come for us. Hear our confession. Heal our struggle. And make us, like Abraham, those who trust you.

Rev. Dr. Sam Rutland joins us Sunday, June 14th. Dr. Rutland is a retired Presbyterian minister (PCUSA) who served congregations in Georgia, N. Carolina, and Florida. He retired as senior minister from Miami Shores Presbyterian Church and is now volunteer Theologian in Residence at FPC-Vero Beach.

PAST CHARITY—giving to the poor—is an essential part of Christian morality. I do not believe one can settle how much we ought to give. I'm afraid the only safe rule is to give more than we can spare . In other words, if our expenditures on comforts, luxuries, amusements, etc., is up to the standard common among those with the same income as our own, we are probably giving away too little. If our charities do not at all pinch or hamper us, I should say they are too small. There ought to be things we should like to do and cannot do because our charitable expenditure excludes them.
