Thank you for contributing to our food drive for the White Center Food Bank!
We will continue to collect shelf stable foods on service Sundays.

More people in the United States are experiencing hunger now than during the COVID-19 pandemic six years ago, according to a survey released yesterday by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. The New York Fed periodically surveys Americans about their food security, inquiring about whether they skip meals, depend on food donations or receive federal assistance for groceries. Replies from the most recent survey, conducted in February, show 10% of families nationwide reported missing meals due to a lack of food, and nearly 16% relied on food donations. For families earning less than $50,000 a year, food insecurity rates were nearly double, with almost 20% having to skip meals or go without food.

Join WSUU’s Racial Justice Change Team (RJCT) on Sunday, May 31st at 2:00 pm at the Southwest Library for a watch party on George Takei’s graphic memoir “They Called Us Enemy.” This is a fifth Sunday event that you can attend on a day when there is no morning worship service.

Published in 2019, “They Called Us Enemy” is a New York Times bestselling graphic memoir which recounts Takei’s childhood imprisoned within American concentration camps during World War II. It reflects on civil liberties, democracy, and what it means to be American — both historically and today.

Kristina Darnell’s team at the Seattle Public Library has planned several events to accompany this One Book, One Coast programming, including the Southwest Library livestream event with George Takei where we’ll be meeting up. Don’t miss it!

George Takei Watch Party

Sunday, May 31, 2 – 3 p.m.
Seattle Public Library – Southwest Branch

9010 35th Ave. SW, 98126
Meeting Room

You can access George Takei’s graphic memoir in several ways. SPL is offering unlimited digital copies of “They Called Us Enemy” through Hoopla. You can place holds or see where physical copies of the book are located in SPL’s catalogue. E-book copies can be accessed through OverDrive and the Libby app.
