In the last few weeks, we've celebrated two major anniversaries among our congregations.

⛪ Last month, First Presbyterian Church of Mountain View marked 175 years of ministry!

Founded in 1851, FPCMV has been a steadfast presence in Silicon Valley for generations — a testament to its resilient community and their commitment to shared ministry.

🇰🇷 On August 2nd, Daesung Presbyterian Church reached 50 years of ministry!

From a small gathering of Korean-American Christians worshiping in a private home in 1976 to a thriving congregation in Sunnyvale, Daesung’s story is rooted in an intergenerational legacy of members who have remained dedicated to the fellowship of their church.

Earlier this week, faith and community leaders gathered at Gilroy City Hall for a prayer vigil in solidarity with immigrant communities and in opposition to the proposed construction of an ICE detention center in Gilroy.

Representing the Presbytery of San José, EP Neal Presa offered a reflection on hope at the invitation of PACT: People Acting in Community Together, reminding us that “Hope is when strangers in the night gather at Gilroy, lifting up prayers, embracing the struggle, and living for another day.”

In the months ahead, we will continue our commitment to prayer and faithful action—remaining vigilant against threats to our immigrant neighbors and answering God’s call to protect the vulnerable.

As in-person events from the 227th General Assembly of the PC (USA) began this weekend, we would like to highlight our phenomenal delegates and commissioners attending to represent our Presbytery in the national conversation.

This year, we give gratitude to Teaching Elder Commissioner Deborah Troester, who has been assigned to the Committee on Gender Justice; Ruling Elder Commissioner Beth Wylie, who has been assigned to the Committee on Racial Justice; and Young Adult Advisory Delegate Kemal Munkem, who will take part in the Committee on Reformed Identity in the World.

Joining alongside them are EP Neal Presa and Stated Clerk Grace Kaori Suzuki as they take part in a week's worth of committee discussions that range from climate and racial justice to Reformed Identity in the United States today.

This year's assembly is centered around the theme "Preserving Toward Wholeness", and we pray that our representatives - as well as the wider community of faith - will continue to do just that during this week's gathering.

With joy and gratitude, the Presbytery of San José continues to celebrate the ordination of the Rev. Cory Piña to the Ministry of Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

On May 23rd, Cory was ordained in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church of Monterey, the congregation under whose care he was nurtured toward this holy calling. The service was a meaningful afternoon of worship and thanksgiving, family, friends, and congregants alike.

Those gathered witnessed a moving moment as Cory’s father, the Rev. Roy Piña, offered the pastoral charge, stating, “Your unique gifting enhances your charge to guide young hearts, spark vibrant joy, and offer steady comfort.”

We give thanks for Rev. Cory Piña, for the community that has supported and encouraged him, and for the Spirit’s continued work through his ministry.

Presbytery staff gathered together on Wednesday to present legal aid funding to two incredible partners — Amigos de Guadalupe and the Community Action Board of Santa Cruz County, Inc. — closing out a months-long effort rooted in our call to seek justice and love our neighbors.

We are so grateful to Amigos and CAB for the work they show up to do every single day on behalf of immigrant families and vulnerable residents across our region. It was a joy to celebrate this milestone together in person.

To everyone who gave and advocated alongside this effort — thank you. This is what the church looks like.

As this fundraiser comes to a close on Pentecost Sunday, May 24, we give thanks for the generosity that made this moment possible — and for the collective commitment to supporting our immigrant neighbors.

📣 Save the Date: 4th NEAR Gathering! │ Nurture, Educate, Advocate, Resource

The Presbytery is excited to announce the 4th NEAR Gathering on Saturday, September 26, 2026, from 9:00 am–1:00 pm at Gilroy Presbyterian Church.

Theme: Christian Nationalism — a timely topic intended to create thoughtful discourse and reflect conversations that will take place at the 277th General Assembly this summer.

Special Guests: We are honored to host keynote speakers Dr. Heath Carter and Dr. Hanna Reichel of Princeton Theological Seminary. Drawing on their work in American Christianity, theology, and public life, they will help us consider practical and prayerful responses to this growing challenge for the church.

The morning will include keynote addresses, small group discussions, and an armchair conversation moderated by EP Neal Presa. Light breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Mark your calendars and plan to join us for a meaningful morning of learning, discernment, and community across congregations. Registration and more details will be shared in the weeks to come!

Earlier this month, we celebrated a moment 26 years in the making.

First Thai Presbyterian Church of San Jose was officially chartered as a congregation of the Presbytery of San Jose — with by-laws adopted, Ruling Elders Krisama Juseekul, Kit Chatsinchai, and Wichayut "Victor" Suttabongoch ordained and installed, and Rev. Prasartpong "Paul" Pansuay installed as pastor. The events were memorialized through the signing of an official Charter Covenant, featuring the names of all 19 founding members.

The day wrapped up with a celebratory Thai feast — served in the spirit of Songkran, or Thai New Year, a holiday marked by humility, gratitude, and renewal. A fitting close to a Sunday long in the making.

This past Thursday, members of the Presbytery at large gathered for a Spirit-filled evening at Westminster Presbyterian Church in San José for our third NEAR Gathering.

Among those gathered, The Rev. Cece Armstrong, Co-Moderator of the 226th General Assembly, offered a memorable and inspiring homily. The evening also included the joyful commissioning of Chrys Saghal, now serving as a Commissioned Ruling Elder at First Presbyterian Church of Santa Clara.

With delicious Thai food, an engaging discussion led by EP Neal Presa, and vibrant fellowship, the evening was a beautiful reminder of the joy found in gathering together. We are especially grateful to Pastor Rev. Dr. Bryan James Franzen and Associate Pastor Rev. Neneth Ross for graciously welcoming the community into their congregation for a time of celebration and shared conversation.
