First Congregational Church of San Jose

First Congregational Church of San Jose Whether you are a believer, a seeker, a person of faith, or one who has no faith at all, you are welcome here. Worship Online, Sundays 10:00am

Our mission: To understand and live out Jesus’ vision for a just and loving world. Following the example of Jesus Christ, we affirm that we are all children of God, and we choose to be a progressive, accepting place of worship. We declare ourselves an Open and Affirming church, welcoming all into our community of faith in the assurance that we are all created by God, reconciled by Christ, and empowered by the grace of the Holy Spirit.

Our congregation is hiring! We are seeking an Assistant to the Interim Senior Minister for Membership Development and Communications.

This part-time position (10–15 hours per week) will focus on welcoming visitors, nurturing relationships with new and current members, supporting the relational life of the church, teaching an adult education class, and helping strengthen our social media and communications presence.

If you know someone with gifts for this ministry, please contact Interim Senior Pastor Olive Hinnant at [email protected].

All were welcomed as we celebrated and affirmed the LGBTQ+ community!

At our June 7th worship service, in a brightly decorated sanctuary, the people joyously declared: No matter who you are, or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here!

Music and singing flowed throughout the hour, featuring the Chancel Choir and the visiting Rainbow Women’s Chorus. During the service Maryann Coole, the church’s director of family ministries, chatted with the youth and children, saying “Everyone deserves justice. Every person deserves to be treated the same.”

In the sermon, Interim Senior Pastor Olive Hinnant spoke about what it’s like to be on a lonely road — to be an outsider — and how God created something new, a world in which all people are included and recognized for who they are. Pastor Olive declared: “You are welcome here! We have a future we have yet to imagine!”

After the service, everyone adjourned to the courtyard for coffee, cake, and the FCCSJ Pride Community Partners Information Fair. Representatives from eight LGBTQ+ community organizations chatted with the crowd. They shared information about their services and how the church could help support their work in the community.

The Pride Sunday celebration is part of the church’s Pride on the Corner summer program. Other activities include marching in the Silicon Valley Pride Parade. and collaborating with other local churches at an Interfaith booth during the Silicon Valley Pride Festival.

For some, it began with an inspiring Sunrise Service by our Labyrinth, led by our Interim Pastor Olive Hinant. Then at 10am, we gathered with friends, families, neighbors, and all who wished to join us in celebrating the joy of Easter. The flower-decked sanctuary was filled with uplifting music from the Chancel Choir, Bell Choir, organ, trumpet, and singing. Then, everyone headed to Fellowship Hall to enjoy a scrumptious brunch prepared and served by our Fellowship Ministry Team....

No Kings!

Thank you to the more than 20 members and friends of First Congregational Church of San Jose who participated in the "No Kings" events in the San Jose area on Saturday, March 28th. Some of us marched downtown and others gathered on neighborhood street corners, but we all were acting as a community of faith!

On the last evening of the 40th Anniversary Women’s Retreat, we watched this amazing sunset that kept unfolding—each moment more colorful than the last—until the horizon glowed over the ocean. Many of us ran outside to watch it together, a simple reminder of the beauty around us and the presence of God in ordinary moments. It was a joy to gather with over forty women, old friends and new, and to reconnect with those who once called this church home....

Joint statement by UCC and DOC regarding US actions in Iran.

We stand with peace and justice. Today, the United Church of Christ and Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) issued a joint statement condemning the recent US-Israel attacks against Iran and calling for an immediate end to violence, a return to diplomacy, and protection of innocent lives caught in the crossfire.

We are called to “beat their swords into plowshares.” Let us pray and advocate for lasting peace in the Middle East.
