LIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE(part 1) by Pastor Maurice Washington Maurice Washington

John 14:15-23,"If you love me,you will obey my command. And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Counselor to be with you-- The SPIRIT OF TRUTH...But the Counselor, the HOLY SPIRIT, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things, and remind you of everything I have said to you"

We often hear about people getting arrested for something wrong that they did while under the influence of alcohol or mind altering drugs. Most often we hear of people being arrested for driving under the influence, or for some violent act that they did under the influence of some substance.

The reality is, we have all lived under some kind of influence that dictates the way we think and act. Our families, the culture, peers, and our romantic relationships, will all influence us. Some of that influence is good, while some of that influence is terrible. Negligent or abusive families can negatively influence your emotions and actions all through life. Bigotry, promiscuity, self-centeredness, blind ambition, and greed are rampant in this society because the culture promotes these this things.

The Good News is when you accept Christ as your Savior, all of the power of these influences will diminish, and may even leave you all together because you are now under the influence of the precious HOLY SPIRIT. This is what Jesus promised in the scriptures cited above. There is no sweeter or more powerful influence than that of the Holy Spirit.

This past Sunday we celebrated Pentecost Sunday to commemorate the day that Jesus kept His promise by sending all believers the Holy Spirit, and now we are blessed with His comforting presence, and His dynamic power as long as we love, trust, and serve Jesus. (To be continued.)

I HAVE DECIDED TO FOLLOW JESUS by Pastor Maurice Washington Maurice Washington
(Continued…)

John 12;27, "If anyone serves me, he/she must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him/her.

We must follow Jesus if we want the honor of God, which means the blessings of God. The blessings of God are divine approval, intimacy with God, protection, provision, and purpose, as well as rewards in this life, and even greater rewards in the next life.

To follow Jesus means we will sometimes have to make sacrifices, and there are people who will reject and depise because you are following Jesus. The "HATERS" are not just out in the world, but many of them regularly attended worship, and speak the loudest about their faith. True followers of Jesus shouldn't be surprised, however, because Jesus had to make sacrifices, and He too was bombarded with much "HATERATION". To be a follower of Christ you must love those who stand with you and those who stand against you. A follower of Jesus will live by the commandment "You shall love your neighbor as your self, even when your neighbor is not easy to love.

Lastly, a true follower of Christ will do his/her part to fight for both justice and righteousness, even if he/she has to stand against the rich and the powerful; even when he/she has to stand against our own government. Don't think that the Church can run from politics because every political decision will eventually impact you personally. Politics affects everything from the water we drink, to the air we breathe, to how our children are educate, to our young people being sent overseas to fight senseless wars. Therefore, when politics becomes unjust and unrighteous true followers of Christ must speak up against it. That is what Jesus did, and as His disciple you must do the same.

I desire to be honored by God, therefore, I must follow God's Son, Jesus Christ. The song says,"I have decided to follow Jesus. No turning back, no turning back." That is the best decision anyone can make. Keep the faith! Much love! God bless!

I HAVE DECIDED TO FOLLOW JESUS by Pastor Maurice Washington Maurice Washington

John 12;27, "If anyone serves me, he/she must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him/her.

Our society and nation are in a nasty state. Many people have the desire to have the honor of God, but don't want to truly follow Jesus. They attend worship, quote the scriptures, and live as best they can by the 10 commandments, yet they are not true followers of Jesus.

To be a true disciple or follower of Christ you must be both salt and light to those who are lost in their sins. Being salt means you will add flavor to this bland and tasteless world. To be light means that you will live so that Jesus can use you to lead people out of darkness of sin into the marvelous light of salvation.

To be a follower you must be willing to go where ever Jesus leads you. That might be up steep mountains or down in deep valleys. When a follower gets to the mountain top, he/she knows that they didn't come there to stay. We we must go down to the valley. We often refer to worship celebrations that are moving and inspiring as mountain top experiences, but mountain top experiences are meant to refuel and restore you for the hard work in the valley.

To follow Jesus you must like what He likes, and try to do what He would do. Conversely, you will dislike the things that Jesus dislikes, and refrain from doing that which you know Jesus wouldn't do. Paul says, "let this mind be in you which is also in Christ Jesus." You can't have the mind of Christ and be self-centered, mean spirited, or arrogant. "Make America Great Again" sounds good, but in reality it is nothing but selfishness. We need to pray "God bless America", but as followers of Christ we should also pray for God to bless Haiti, Israel and the Palestinians, Nigeria, India, Sweden, and the entire world.

I NEED YOU TO SURVIVE by Pastor Maurice Washington Maurice Washington

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12, "Two are better than one because they have a good reward for their labor. If either of them falls down, one can help the other up, but pity anyone who falls alone, and has no one to help them up. Again, if two, lie down together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone. Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken."

Many of us have been taught to be a "Rugged Individual," Which means don't trust or lean on anyone but yourself. Some people grew up in families that taught them never to ask for help nor to accept charity, but just because our culture teaches us to have these attitudes, it doesn't mean that what we were taught was right. In fact, if you really meditate on the these words from Ecclesiastes you will truly see that what we have been taught is absolutely wrong. These attitudes are not at all Biblical.

A song that came out in recent years says, "I need you, you need me. We're all apart of God's body. It is His will that every need be supplied. You are important to me. I need you survive". This song is right in line with true Biblical teaching. None of us would be where we are nor what we are, without the help of someone else along the way.

This song is telling us that life is both give, and take. If we are going to survive on this planet we must see that I need you and you need me.

Some of us want to push past surviving to get to thriving, but you can't thrive without first surviving, and surviving in this sinful world is not an easy thing to do. To THRIVE should be your ultimate goal, but you must first do all that you can, with the help of the Lord, to SURVIVE. You must survive the storms of life. You must first survive the dungeon of disappointment and despair, the deep valleys of depression, and many of us have to strive to survive the wild beasts of bigotry, ignorance, misogyny, patriarchy, and rejection.

God has someone at every stage of your life who is willing to warm your soul, pick you up when you fall, and help to guide you on your way. If you want to someday THRIVE, accept the fact that you can't get there on your own. I need you, you need me, we're all apart of God's body. It is His will that every need be supplied... I need you to survive. AMEN.

LORD, PLEASE OPEN MY EYES by Pastor Maurice Washington Maurice Washington

Ephesians 1:17-18, "...so that you may also know Him(God) better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which HE has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints(ALL BELIEVERS)

Psalm 119:18,"Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of Your(God"s) law.

A beautiful hymn says, "Open my eyes that I may see, glimpses my God, Thy will to see."These words should be more than the lyrics of a hymn that you sing in church, but a prayer that you sincerely and often pray. Neither the hymn nor the verses above are talking about your physical eyes. They are talking about your spiritual eyes; the eyes of Faith. If you desire for your spiritual eyes to be opened, you must PRAYERFULLY, and OFTEN read, and study the WORD OF GOD.

Yesterday's meditation was entitled SANCTIMONIOUS VS SANCTIFIED. SANCTIMONIOUS people all too often quote scripture without knowing the syntax, nor the cultural, historical, and biblical context of the scripture. SANCTIMONIOUS people will also cherry pick the verses that they like so that they can use them to uphold their unbiblical agendas, even when their agendas are wrong. On the other hand they will completely overlook and disregard any part of the Bible that contradicts what they wrongly believe. The devil uses SANCTIMONIOUS people, and their bad theology to make that which is good and right, look bad and sinful, while making that which is sinful and bad, look good and right. This is one the devil's oldest, biggest, and worst tricks, but if you allow the Holy Spirit to open your spiritual eyes in accordance with what the Bible truly says, You will not fall for the okey doke.(to be continued.)

SANCTIMONIOUS VS SANCTIFIED by Pastor Maurice Washington Maurice Washington

Luke 18:13-14: But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to Heaven, but beat his breast, and said, God have mercy on me a sinner."...I (JESUS) tell you that this man went home justified before God, for all those who exalt themselves shall be humbled. All those who humble themselves shall be exalted(lifted up).

Jesus desires for all of us to be "SANCTIFIED", but He doesn't want any of us to be "SANCTIMONIOUS." In the verses precedings the verses printed above, Jesus tells a parable about a Pharisees that had the nerve to stand in the temple bragging about how Holy his lifestyle was, and how devout and pious he was in his religiosity. The Pharisee even had the gall to thank God that he wasn't like the sinners, and especially not the depised Tax Collector, who was praying near him in the Temple. Jesus made it clear that the God did NOT receive the Pharisee's prayer because the Pharisee thought that he was the biggest and brightest star in the sky. He looked down on other people. That is being SANCTIMONIOUS. The tax collector left the Temple forgiven by God for his sins because he humbled himself and confessed his sin. That put the tax collector on the path to BEING SANCTIFIED. SANCTIMONIOUS people cannot see their own faults and think they are closer to God than anyone else. The person that is BEING SANCTIFIED knows and acknowledges he/she has faults and failures, but they are sincerely desiring to change, and to grow in their faith.

Notice I said "BEING SANCTIFIED". I didn't say the tax collector was SANCTIFIED. Sanctification is a continuous process that is not completed until you get to Heaven. Being in the process of SANCTIFICATION keeps you in the favor of God. Being SANCTIMONIOUS doesn't get you anything.

Lord I am a sinner, but by faith I am trusting Your Holy Spirit to keep me, and lead me in the process of sanctification, so that I can live a life that You can use to win souls. In Jesus' name. Amen

LORD, PLEASE HELP MY LIGHT TO SHINE BRIGHTLY #2 by Pastor Maurice Washington Maurice Washington

Matthew 5:16,"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father in Heaven."

For much of the first 3 hundred years of the Church, the Roman Empire reacted by placing Christians under hard and cruel persecution. Nero had BELIEVERS dipped in tar, then set on fire to be human torches. The Romans placed Christians in arenas where the cheering multitudes would watch with delight as hungry lions and tigers ate them alive. Yet the more BELIEVERS were persecuted, the more Roman citizens became Christians. Why would the people of that era choose to become Christians when they clearly saw the cruel way that Christians were treated? The answer is, these early Christians truly let their lights shine, by meeting even the worse persecution with joy, peace, love and the divine strength that only the Holy Spirit can give. They met their deaths with positive attitudes because they KNEW that they were going HOME to Eternal peace and joy with Jesus. Faith in that knowledge gave them the strength to face even wild beasts.

I am not saying that we modern day BELIEVERS should just lay down to be the door mats for this evil world. We should fight the devil on every hand, but we should try not to fight in the same ways that the world fights. We shouldn't be trying to force others to BELIEVE. When we face stern oppression, as much as is possible, we should avoid striking back with vulgarity or violence.

When sinners see how you have benefited from living justly, and in righteousness, and when they see you counter the world's abuse with gentleness, and with love, joy, and peace in your heart and on your lips, they too will want what you have. They will want Jesus too. Lord please help my light to shine. In the precious and powerful name of Jesus I pray Amen and
AMEN

LORD, PLEASE HELP MY LIGHT TO SHINE BRIGHTLY by Pastor Maurice Washington Maurice Washington

Matthew 5:16,"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father in Heaven."

We often sing loudly and exuberantly "THIS LITTLE LIGHT Of MINE, I AM GONNA LET IT SHINE" which is a song based on the scripture above. Unfortunately, many of us are unintentionally dimming our lights by being legalistic(Galatians 3:14), judgemental(Matthew 7:1-3), and self-righteous(Luke 18:9-14),all of which the Bible speaks against.

So many of us think that because we live morally upright at all times we are making our lights shine, and others of us think we are going to make our lights shine by trying to force those we deem as sinful to start living by all of our rules and regulations. When Jesus tells us to let our lights shine, he is not telling us either of these things. HE IS telling you to live a life that reflects Him being in your life by the faith, love, joy, peace, hope, inner strength, and wisdom that He gave you when He saved your soul.

Of course we need to live morally up right lives if we want to be blessed, but it is possible to live a life that is superduper clean, yet still be mean spirited, and snobbish towards those that are different in what they believe, act, and think.

The Lord commanded us to win new souls for the Kingdom(Matthew 28-19-20), but Jesus never told us to try to force people to accept Him. He never told us to dehumanize, ostracize, or marginalize other human beings. So how are we to reach those that are still lost in their sins? Jesus said,"By this shall all men know you are my disciples, by your LOVE for one another"(John 13:35)

Paul said,"Brothers and sisters, if anyone is caught in sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person GENTLY. But watch yourself or you may also be tempted."

Lord, please help my light to shine not by being legalistic, judgemental, or self-righteous, but by the way Your love, joy, and peace shines through me. AMEN

GOD IS TRYING TO TELL YOU SOMETHING by Pastor Maurice Washington Maurice Washington

Psalm 19:1-2, The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands. Day after day they pour forth speech. Night after night they reveal knowledge."

Jeremiah 5:21,"Hear this you foolish and senseless people, who have eyes but cannot see, who have ears but cannot hear."

In the "Color Purple",a song was sung that simply said, "God is trying to tell you something." There are many people who don't realize how true the song is. The older I get, the more I realize that God is constantly speaking, but we are not listening. If we look and listen with the eyes of Faith we will see and hear God in everybody, in everything, in every place, at all times.

God is speaking, but often we are so busy getting things done, being nosey and judgmental, or being entertained that we can't hear or see God all around us. God can speak to you through your the washing machine, which cleans clothes by agitating the water. The detergent expidites, and more effectively removes the dirt. Sometimes God has to allow storms in your life to agitate the dirt of sin out of your life, and the power and presence of the Holy Spirit is the detergent that moves along the cleaning process.

Psalm 19:1-2 is trying to tell you that God is talking to you through nature. The yearly cycle of seasons is telling you about God's continuity. It says in Malachi 3:6,"I the Lord do not charge, therefore, you are not consumed, oh sons of Jacob." Watching an eagle soaring high in the sky reminds us of both the majesty and faithfulness of God. On snowy days you won't see the pigeons, cardinals, sparrows, and grackles, but when the snow has melted, they are back to doing what birds do. So if God cares for the birds, God will care for you too. Stop worrying and start trusting God.(Matthew 6:26)

The song says, "The Lord is speaking to you, to you. Why are you waiting. The Lord is speaking to you." Stop, look, and listen for God.AMEN

KINDNESS AND DECENY WILL BE REWARDED. By Pastor Maurice Washington Maurice Washington

1 Samuel 30:They found an Egyptian...and gave him bread, and he ate,and they gave him water to drink... David said to him, "To whom do you belong? And from where are you from?"
He said "I am a young man from Egypt, servant to an Amalikite, and my master left me behind because I fell sick three days ago...And David said to to him, "Will you take me down to this band? And he said, "Swear to me by God that you will not kill me, or deliver me into the hands of my master, and I will take you down to this band....and David smote them(the Amalikites) from twilight until the evening of the next day...David recovered all that had been taken, and David rescued his 2 wives.”

We, here in the USA, need to fix the problem of immigration, but the way we are now treating emigrants is atrocious and down right sinful. What we are doing now does not fit the biblical mandate to be be kind to the foreigner who is your midst. "The foreigner residing among you must be treated like your native-born. You shall love them as yourself." (Leviticus 19:33-34). We should be appalled at the presidident referring to Somalians as garbage, Haitians as pet eaters, and Mexicans as murderers and ra**st, and we should be as angry as strirred up fire ants that others in high positions have not called him out on his evil. Someone needs to tell him that "everything should be done decently," which is also a biblical mandate( I Corinthians 14:40)

When we look at the last part of 1 Samuel
30 we see David doing exactly what Leviticus told us to do. He and his pose are good examples of putting Leviticus 19:33-34 into practice.
A. David was NOT concerned about the Egyptians ethnicity. He saw a human being in dire need of help, and gave him that help.
B. He and his men were generous in sharing what they had with the Egyptian.
C. David kept his promise to protect the Egyptian.
D. The Egyptian kept his promise to help them catch the kidnappers.

The master of this enslaved Egyptian used him up, then threw him away when he was too weak to serve, as if he was just a used up paper plate. David treated the Egyptian with kindness and respect as a fellow human being and he was rewarded for that kindness. It is still true that "Love Makes the World go round." Keep the faith.

Much love. God bless
