St. John's Lutheran Church

St. John's Lutheran Church A Legacy of Worship and Outreach in San Antonio since 1857 Welcome to St. John’s Lutheran Church! Baptismal instruction for all ages is also available.

As one of the oldest Lutheran congregations in all of Texas and known for many years as the “Lutheran Cathedral of the Southwest”, we are pleased to offer the traditional liturgy as our primary worship setting, and Holy Communion is celebrated each and every Sunday morning. Believing that Christ is truly present in the consecrated bread and wine, all who wish to receive the Holy Sacrament are both

invited and encouraged to do so. We provide First Communion instruction to children who have completed the 2nd Grade. There are so many opportunities here at St. John’s for you to make a positive and lasting difference for yourself, your household, our community, and even beyond! We warmly invite you to come, discover, and find your place among us.

So much holiday joy today! 🎄☃️ We loved hosting the TubaMeisters rehearsal at St. John’s this morning before more than 120 tubas filled La Villita with Christmas cheer. What a sound and what a gift to our city!

🎄 Season of Giving at St. John’s 🎶
As we celebrate the hope and joy of this season, we invite you to help us restore the heart of our worship—the pipe organ that has led generations in song. Your support moves us closer to bringing this beautiful instrument back to life for our entire community. Every gift makes a difference. ❤️

We hope to see you TODAY at 4:00pm, as we celebrate the Second Sunday of Advent with Choral Vespers & Eucharist. A wine and cheese reception will follow in the courtyard.

This beautiful liturgy takes place as dusk begins to fall, and we illumine the church by lighting candles to symbolize the coming of Christ, who scatters the darkness of the world. We give thanks for the day just past and make an evening sacrifice of praise to God (Psalm 141:1). By sanctifying different parts of the day to God, in this case, evening, the Church fulfills Jesus' command to "pray always" (Luke 18:1; 1 Thessalonians 5:17).

If you caught the Trinity University Handel Ensemble on Texas Public Radio 88.3 FM yesterday, you already know what a treat they are! Don’t miss your chance to hear them live this Friday at 12:00 noon for our First Friday Concert.

"[Bells] are our earliest timepieces. They’re our earliest form of mass communication. Bell towers signal the start and end of everything," says Trinity University's Stevie Berryman, who leads the TU Handbell Ensemble. Hear the beautiful tintinnabulation in our KPAC Performance Studio at the link.
