There are many reasons people come to church — fellowship, encouragement, friendship, and simply having a place to belong. We are thankful for all of those things.

But at the heart of our gathering is something even greater: 𝐆𝐨𝐝 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐮𝐬 𝐇𝐢𝐬 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐝.

This September, we invite you to gather with us at Southside Baptist Church as we worship the Lord, open the Scriptures, hear the Word preached, and grow together as disciples of Jesus Christ.

HE DROVE A BEETLE PACKED WITH BIBLES PAST ARMED GUARDS AND PRAYED THIS ONE PRAYER.

In 1955, a young Dutch missionary named Andrew van der Bijl traveled to a Communist youth congress in Poland with nothing unusual in his suitcase: a Bible, a change of clothes, and hundreds of gospel tracts. What he found behind the Iron Curtain changed the course of his life: isolated Christians who believed the rest of the world had completely forgotten them. He decided he would spend his life closing that gap, one border crossing at a time.

Starting in 1957, van der Bijl began smuggling Bibles into Communist countries hidden in his blue Volkswagen Beetle, a car that became known among fellow believers as "the miracle car" for its uncanny ability to keep running. Before every border crossing, he prayed the same request: "Lord, in my luggage I have Scripture I want to take to Your children. When You were on earth, You made blind eyes see. Now, I pray, make seeing eyes blind. Do not let the guards see those things You do not want them to see." He later said that in twenty years of praying that exact prayer, he never once lost a Bible to a border search.

The KGB eventually compiled a 150-page dossier tracking his activities, but never managed to stop him. His 1967 memoir, "God's Smuggler," sold more than 10 million copies in 35 languages, and he went on to found what became the global ministry Open Doors, which still serves persecuted Christians in restricted nations today. By the time he passed away in 2022 at age 94, his work is believed to have delivered more than a million Bibles into some of the most closed-off countries on earth.

The Lord has blessed us with some wonderful services and good preaching throughout August, and we’re thankful for another opportunity to gather together 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟮𝟯. 𝗪𝗲’𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗲 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿.

As we continue praying for the pastor God is preparing for Southside, our desire remains simple: to worship the Lord, hear the Bible preached, encourage one another, and trust God for what He has ahead for our church.
