God of work and rest, bless the labor of our hands, strengthen those who are weary, protect those whose work places them at risk, and lead us toward justice for all who labor. Amen.

It’s been a tough morning and arriving at church I needed a band-aid. Grabbing one from the first aid kit in the office I was surprised to find a little message. Sometimes we just need that reminder.

We often talk about answering God’s call through service: caring, advocating, accompanying, showing up.

But sometimes faithfulness looks like stopping.

Sabbath reminds us that rest belongs to the rhythm of vocation, too. We are more than what we accomplish, produce, or provide for others.

So perhaps the invitation for this weekend is simple:

Rest without guilt.
Receive without earning.
Be present without producing.

There will be time again for doing.

For now, simply be.

Today we remember two Christian martyrs who resisted the evil of Na**sm.

Maximilian Kolbe, a Polish Franciscan friar, was imprisoned at Auschwitz, where he volunteered to take the place of another prisoner who had been condemned to die.

Kaj Munk, a Danish Lutheran pastor, playwright, and outspoken critic of the N**i occupation, used his pulpit and his voice to challenge hatred, antisemitism, and oppression. He was murdered by the Gestapo in 1944.

Their lives remind us that faith is more than what we believe. Faith calls us to stand with those who are threatened, to speak when silence protects injustice, and to love our neighbors even when doing so carries a cost.

May their witness give us courage to live a faith active in love.

“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” — Romans 12:21
