Today, as we celebrate the Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows, we honor the Blessed Virgin Mary, who remained faithfully united to her Son in His suffering and death. “And you yourself a sword will pierce so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” (Luke 2:35) From Simeon’s prophecy to her presence at the foot of the Cross, Mary shared deeply in the suffering of Christ and persevered in faith as God’s plan of salvation was fulfilled. Through the intercession of Our Lady of Sorrows, may we remain close to Jesus in times of suffering and entrust our trials to Him with faith.

Today, as we celebrate the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, we hear: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life” (John 3:16). The Cross reveals the saving love of God, through which Christ conquered sin and death and opened the way to eternal life. Let us look to the Cross with faith and gratitude, asking the Lord to strengthen the people of God on Long Island in discipleship and draw us ever closer to Him.

Today, we celebrate the Memorial of Saint John Chrysostom, Bishop and Doctor of the Church, who served as Archbishop of Constantinople and became one of the Church’s greatest preachers. Known for his powerful homilies on Scripture, he condemned corruption and luxury, urged Christians to care for the poor, and taught that love of Christ must be shown through concrete acts of mercy. May we have his courage to proclaim the truth, his reverence for Sacred Scripture, and his compassion for those in need. Saint John Chrysostom, pray for us!

Today, as we celebrate the Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Jesus tells His disciples, “I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times” (Matthew 18:22). Christ calls us to forgive generously because we have first received the abundant mercy of God. Let us ask the Lord for the grace to forgive from the heart and to reflect His mercy in our families, parishes, and communities across Long Island.

Bishops Barres celebrated the 12:10 PM Mass today at Saint Agnes Cathedral, joined by priests of the diocese, remembering the victims of the attacks of September 11, 2001, on the 25th anniversary of that tragic day.
