This Sunday's gospel, April 19, begins with two disciples walking to Emmaus, overcome with sadness, loss, and disappointment. They had hoped Jesus, who was crucified, would be the one to redeem Israel! Yet the risen Christ walks with them and then opens their eyes in the breaking of the bread. Each Sunday our hearts burn within us as the scriptures are proclaimed and Christ appears to us as bread is broken and wine is poured. The story of Emmaus becomes the pattern of our worship each Lord’s day. Come and join us as we continue our Easter celebration.

We invite you and your family to join us this Sunday, April 19 as we come together as God's faithful to worship and praise God. We gather at 8:30 a.m. or 10:00 a.m. in our sanctuary. We look forward to meeting and worshiping with you.

If you are unable to join us in-person, our 8:30 a.m. service will be streamed on Facebook. All of our services are available throughout the week on Facebook and YouTube.

We do invite you to support Trinity’s ministries financially by giving online through our website (TrinityRockford.org) or by mail (200 N. First St., Rockford, IL 61107). Most of all, we thank you for your continued prayers. Praise be to God!

A little bit of history...

The 1950's--Building a new sanctuary

Original plans called for a sanctuary which seated about 600 people. Pastor Beckstrand, Sr. was "shocked--it was one-fourth smaller than the old church." He pleaded for "big thinking" and persuaded the congregation to make plans for a sanctuary which could seat up to 1,200 people.

Another concern: Where to build the church? In an account Pastor Beckstrand II wrote for Trinity's 1982 directory, he explained that he met in 1951 with Rockford's city planner, who "brought maps and figures, showing that Trinity was within two blocks of the center of population of the greater Rockford area. This center had not moved more than a block in 100 years. If Trinity should decide to build, our present location was the best place inasmuch as 40 percent of the members lived on the west side and 60 percent on the east side of the Rock River. We were situated between four main traffic arteries, Jefferson Street and State Street, and Main Street and North Second Street. This would be a perfect location. The city planner said no place in the Rockford area was more ideal for a church than Trinity's current location. He said we should occupy the entire block."

Beckstrand II again pointed out in a Rockford Register Star article in 1981 that the State and Main area of Rockford used to be the center of the city. "When we came, there wasn't a vacancy downtown. Police were always on the corner of State and Main streets because the flow of traffic was heavy at all times. There were no one-way streets and parking didn't seem to be a serious problem. People rarely moved out of Rockford--the city was the top of the ladder for many positions in business and industry."
