For more information visit our website www.unitedlutheranrockford.org We hope this site will help you learn more about us and our witness for Christ. We strive to recognize and nurture the Christ in ourselves and each person that we encounter along the way. Our church is a thriving community of believers, and lovers of the word of God. United Lutheran Church has a long tradition of outreach and se

rvice to its members and the community. We hope you will join us
for service on Sunday to experience for yourself the fellowship of Christ. United Evangelical Lutheran Church, founded in 2007, has a rich history. United started as two separate congregations, Messiah Lutheran Church and Faith Lutheran Church, once these two churches became yoked Pastor Paul Walker became the pastor of both congregations worshiping separately, these two congregations began to know one another through activities, music, and fellowship. In 2006 this yoked congregation started the process of becoming one congregation and on January 28, 2007 became United Lutheran Church. At that time we became a Redevelopment Church under the Northern Illinois Synod and had many new decisions to make including where to worship. After the sale of the Messiah Lutheran Church property, the economy took a fall and we were unable to sell the Faith Lutheran Church property. After several offers on a new location it was decided that United would remain at our current 3630 N. location and that we would grow our congregation here. Pastor Julane Nease has been with us since Aug 2015 and she would love to answer any questions you may have. The members of United Lutheran Church believe in God's purpose for us. We are dedicated, hardworking and strong and continue to grow our church community. Office hours are Monday through Thursday 9am to 2pm and we are here every Sunday morning.

Fear is loud in our world.
But as followers of Christ, we are called to carry something stronger.

Carry hope when others are discouraged.
Carry compassion when others are hurting.
Carry courage when justice is needed.
Carry the love of Christ into places longing for healing, dignity, and peace.

This is the work of faith lived out in the world.

Our emails and phone messages will be set to away settings. We ask that you only reach out to us during this time if there is an emergency. Please indicate that it is an emergency when you call or email. We will only be responding to emergencies during the week. New Living Compass podcast episode--listen at www.livingcompass.org/podcast or in any podcast app.

Liminal time is that time between "no longer" and "not yet." It is something we experience in many seasons of our lives — something we see now as we enter the season of graduations and weddings. Other experiences of liminal time, though, come not by choice but by loss. This episode explores how the two most important factors in helping us when we find ourselves in the "in between" times are spirituality and community.

We’re looking forward to participating in this service; hope you’ll join us from wherever you are!

I saw a stranger yesterday;
I put food in the eating place,
Drink in the drinking place,
Music in the listening place:

And in the sacred name of the Triune God,
He blessed myself and my house,
My cattle and my dear ones.
And the lark said in her song
Often, often, often
Goes the Christ in the stranger’s guise.

- A traditional Gaelic Rune of Hospitality

—————

The saint has a vision,
a crane battered by wind and rain
would tumble onto lona’s shores
in three turns of sun and moon,
the third hour before evening.

Indeed at the appointed time
she slumps her long slender
body across grass still soaked
from storm, down fluttering,
her voice strained, then silent.

Columba sends a monk to greet her,
gather her tenderly into his strong
solid arms, lift her all hollow bone
and white feathers, welcome
this weary one into the hearth.

Crane comes as pilgrim
buffeted by elements into exile,
a stranger at the door,
three days later, renewed, revived,
enough time for resurrection,

she lifts her wide wings gently
at first, then with greater force
to carry herself back across sea
and threshold, her flight
a prayer of homecoming.

–Christine Valters Paintner, St. Columba and the Crane

Howard Thurman once wrote:

"The bitter truth is that the Church has permitted the various hate-inspired groups in our common life to establish squatter's rights in the minds of believers because there has been no adequate teaching of the meaning of the faith in terms of human dignity and human worth."

As followers of Christ, we are called to see the image of God in every person. Faith is not only what we believe, but how we treat our neighbors, especially those who are marginalized, excluded, or harmed.

May we continue the work of building communities rooted in dignity, compassion, justice, and love.
