Every Christian knows they should be living in love. Very few make it the central ambition of their life.

Something else usually takes the place — Bible knowledge, conversions, the size of the church, a position in ministry. You can succeed at all of those and still be jealous and paranoid, and Scripture says that leaves you in the darkness.

Paul prayed that his readers would be rooted and grounded in love, and so filled with all the fullness of God. That is the goal.

Here is an uncomfortable thought. The kind of love preached in most sermons can be obeyed by any reasonably nice person. Mow the neighbour's lawn, tick the box. You do not need to be born again to manage that.

Agape love is different. It is the love of Jesus on the cross — sacrificial, without a trace of selfishness, and quite impossible unless you are filled with the Spirit.

That is why it stands at the end of the continuum. It is what the whole process is for.

Look at how God taught the apostle Peter. Pentecost. The healing at the gate. Cornelius. The Jerusalem Council. Every one of them a crisis or an impossible task.

God led Peter into difficulty again and again, so that Peter would cry out for wisdom and receive it.

And James promises that wisdom is given generously, without criticism. God never says, "Why do you need wisdom in that area? Don't you ever learn?"

Peter learned two lessons on the water that day.

That by faith in Jesus he could do what Jesus was doing. And that without faith he was an ordinary man who would sink like a stone.

The first lesson cannot be taught by anyone. Not by me, not by the finest Bible teacher alive. You have to go "Aha" and get it yourself. That is what being taught by the Spirit means.

And it is why God so often leads us into deep water.

You are being led when you give back the extra change you were handed by mistake. When your conscience says apologise, and you obey. When you read about turning the other cheek and realise it applies to you this week.

No dream required. No voice in your head. The Spirit wants you honest and faithful, so you are.
