What If We Treated First-Time Givers Like First-Time Guests?

Most churches have a thoughtful process for welcoming first-time visitors.

We greet them, thank them for coming, answer their questions, and invite them to take a next step.

But what about someone who gives for the very first time?

In this clip from the Stewardship Leader Podcast, DeWayne McNally makes an observation that challenged me:

"People give their first gift because they're asked. They'll typically give their second and third gift because they're thanked."

That simple statement reframes generosity as a discipleship journey, not just a financial transaction.

A first gift isn't merely a donation to the church. It's often someone's first tangible step of trusting God with their finances.

How we respond matters.

Do we simply send a giving receipt...

Or do we acknowledge their step of faith, celebrate it, and invite them into a deeper journey of stewardship?

Churches have become intentional about helping first-time guests feel seen and valued. Perhaps it's time we showed that same intentionality to first-time givers.

Because stewardship isn't about what we want from people.
It's about what God wants for them.
