It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the Reno Police Department announces the unexpected passing of one of our own, Sergeant Ernest Kazmar. A beloved member of our department, Sergeant Ernest Kazmar, passed away on August 22, 2025.

“Sergeant Ernest Kazmar was a respected colleague and a steadfast public servant,” said Chief Kathryn Nance. “We are grateful for his service and the compassion he brought to the Law Enforcement profession. Our hearts are with his family, friends, and our RPD team during this difficult time.”

Sergeant Kazmar started his career with the Reno Police Department on October 23, 2009, as a lateral officer who previously worked at the Nye County Sheriff’s Office and the University of Nevada, Reno Police Department.

Sergeant Kazmar’s death is a tragic incident and one that is felt deeply by his family, friends, members of the Reno Police Department, and surrounding law enforcement agencies who worked with him throughout his career. Sergeant Kazmar is survived by his immediate and extended family. Please keep everyone impacted in your thoughts and prayers.

Today is the 46th anniversary of the line of duty death of James Duane Hoff. That night, he was participating in an undercover operation when he was kidnapped and murdered. The site of the James D. Hoff Peace Officer Memorial is located near where the incident happened. The Memorial stands not only as a lasting tribute to the ultimate sacrifice Officer Hoff made but to all peace officers who have died in the line of duty in the State of Nevada.

It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that the Churchill County Sheriff’s Office has to share that one of our valued members, Deputy Tristan Redmond has passed away. After being involved in an off-duty motorcycle crash on May 2, 2025, he was flown to Renown Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. After fighting for his life, Deputy Redmond succumbed to his injuries on May 13, 2025, with his wife and family by his side. Deputy Redmond selflessly served the citizens of Churchill County for the past 4 years, was a Field Training Officer (FTO), and was the secretary of the Churchill County Sheriff’s Deputies Association. Deputy Redmond is described by his law enforcement family as hard-working, dedicated to law enforcement, and served his community with integrity, vigilance, and persistence. Deputy Redmond’s passing has left an unimaginable void in the lives of those who knew and loved him. Please send prayers to this young man’s family, friends, and coworkers. This is a heartbreaking situation, and we are deeply saddened by this tragic event.

📲 Do you have an old cell phone you aren’t using anymore? If you do, we are collecting them. The goal is to send the phones to the 911 Cell Phone Bank, which in turn provides the refurbished cell phone to victims in our community.

If you are able and willing to, please drop the old cell phones off this week to our front desk at 1701 E. Prater Way, Monday-Friday (8am-6pm) and Saturday (8am-4pm).
