2​5 ​Years ​Later​: Remembering with Sorrow & Gratitude ​at St. Patrick's Cathedral

​Y​esterday, standing inside St. Patrick's Cathedral for the anniversary, we found ourselves in front of the new mural in the Fifth Avenue entrance — and one panel in particular stopped us in our tracks: an angel holding a firefighter's helmet, watching over the first responders who gave everything on September 11th.

Archbishop Hicks spoke about this very panel during ​yesterday's memorial Mass, calling it a reflection of "the very best of who we are." Standing there, surrounded by the cathedral's quiet and this new tribute woven into its walls, it's easy to understand why. Visitors stop here. They look for a face they recognize. They remember.

Today, we hold in our prayers all those we lost — the first responders, the office workers, the passengers, the neighbors and friends who never came home. May they rest in eternal peace, and may their memory continue to be a blessing to all who carry it forward.

A Prayer for the Nearly 3,000 Souls Lost on 9/11

Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord;
Lord, hear my voice!
O let your ears be attentive
to the voice of my pleading.

If you, O Lord, should mark our guilt,
Lord, who would survive?
But with you is found forgiveness:
for this we revere you.

My soul is waiting for the Lord,
I count on his word.
My soul longs for the Lord
more than watchman for daybreak.

Let the watchman count on daybreak
and Israel on the Lord.
Because with the Lord there is mercy
and fullness of redemption,
Israel indeed he will redeem
from all its iniquity.

Santa Teresa de Calcuta: Paciencia, misericordia y servicio

Queridos hermanos en Cristo:

Nuestra querida Madre Teresa nos enseñó que la oración y la adoración eucarística son la fuente de la caridad cristiana: el tiempo que pasamos con Cristo nos da la fuerza para llevar su compasión a un mundo que sufre. Ella nos recuerda que el corazón del Evangelio consiste en demostrar amor, reconocer a Cristo en «los más pobres de entre los pobres» y servirle con ternura, humildad y alegría.

Arraigada en la oración y en la fidelidad a la Iglesia, demostró que ningún acto de caridad es pequeño cuando se ofrece a Jesús. Una sonrisa, saber escuchar con paciencia o cuidar de quienes están solos, de los que sufren, de los moribundos y de los olvidados puede convertirse en un encuentro santo con el Señor.

Su vida de servicio radiante en medio del sufrimiento da testimonio de que la santidad no es la ausencia de dudas, sino un amor firme: elegir a Cristo cada día y permitir que su misericordia actúe a través de nosotros. Que su intercesión nos ayude a ver a Jesús en cada prójimo, a amar sin medir el costo y a convertirnos en humildes instrumentos de su paz.

Please Join Us in Remembrance: Two Memorial Masses for the 25th Anniversary of September 11th

Twenty-five years later, we pause to remember, to pray, and to honor the lives forever changed.

On Thursday, September 10, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. ET, Archbishop Ronald A. Hicks will celebrate a Memorial Mass at Saint Patrick's Cathedral, commemorating 25 years since September 11, 2001. The Mass will honor all those we lost, who we now hold in the communion of the faithful departed, remembering them with prayer and entrusting them to God's mercy. We also invite you to join us in person at Calvary Cemetery on Friday, September 11 at 10:00 AM for a special 25th Anniversary 9/11 Memorial Mass. Father Michael Idahosa of St. Mary's Winfield Church will celebrate Mass at St. Calixtus Chapel, 34-02 Greenpoint Ave.

Together, we will pray for the nearly 3,000 lives lost, for the families and loved ones who continue to carry their memory, and for all those whose lives were forever changed. We remember with the deepest heartfelt gratitude all who showed extraordinary courage and compassion during one of our nation's darkest days.

Saint Teresa of Calcutta: Patience, Mercy, and Service

Dear Beloved in Christ,

Our dear Mother Teresa showed ​us that prayer and Eucharistic adoration are the wellspring of Christian charity​: Time spent with Christ gives us the strength to carry His compassion into a hurting world. She reminds us that the heart of the Gospel is ​demonstrating love​, recognizing Christ in “the poorest of the poor,” and serving Him with tenderness, humility, and joy.

Rooted in prayer and fidelity to the Church, she ​showed that no act of charity is small when offered for Jesus. A smile, a patient ear, or care for the lonely, suffering, dying, and forgotten can become a holy encounter with the Lord.

Her life of radiant service amid suffering bears witness that sanctity is not the absence of doubt, but steadfast love—choosing Christ each day and allowing His mercy to ​work through us. May her intercession help us see Jesus in every neighbor, love without counting the cost, and become humble instruments of His peace.

Una región de luto: los terremotos de 2026 en América Latina

América Latina ha soportado durante mucho tiempo la carga de asentarse sobre algunos de los suelos más inestables de la Tierra. Miles de temblores recorren la región cada año; la mayoría son imperceptibles, pero algunos tienen la fuerza suficiente para cambiarlo todo. El terremoto que sacudió Colombia el 10 de agosto sigue siendo uno de los capítulos más dolorosos del año: 331 personas perdieron la vida, miles más resultaron heridas y 240 permanecen aún desaparecidas.

Sin embargo, es en Venezuela donde la tragedia ha alcanzado una dimensión especialmente devastadora. Dos terremotos consecutivos, ocurridos el 24 de junio, desencadenaron una tragedia que superó con creces los peores temores. A finales de agosto, se había confirmado la muerte de 6.509 personas, mientras que más de 226.000 habían sido atendidas en hospitales. Se trata de uno de los desastres sísmicos más mortíferos de los últimos años en América Latina; un recordatorio aleccionador de la rapidez con la que puede ceder el suelo bajo un hogar, un hospital, una iglesia o toda una comunidad.

Tras semejante pérdida, lo que queda no son solo escombros y estadísticas, sino la labor silenciosa y constante de rescate, memoria y reconstrucción, llevada a cabo por feligreses, vecinos, voluntarios y desconocidos que siguen brindándose apoyo mutuo cuando la tierra les falló.

Al asistir a la Santa Misa este fin de semana, recordamos con profundo dolor a todos aquellos que hemos perdido; los acogemos ahora en la comunión de los fieles difuntos, recordándolos en oración y encomendándolos a la misericordia de Dios. Que descansen en paz.

NEWS: A Region in Mourning, Latin America's 2026 Earthquakes

Let us pray for our brothers and sisters in Latin America, for the region has long carried the weight of living atop some of the earth's most dangerous ground. Thousands of tremors ripple through the region each year, most too faint to notice, a few strong enough to change everything. Colombia's August 10 earthquake remains one of the year's most sorrowful chapters. 331 people were killed and hundreds more were injured and more than 200 are still unaccounted for...

And yet it is Venezuela that carries the deepest grief of this year. Twin earthquakes set in motion a tragedy that would grow far beyond anyone's fears. By late August, more than 6,500 people had been confirmed dead, with tens of thousands more injured or still missing. It stands among the deadliest earthquake disasters Latin America has witnessed in generations, a sobering reminder of how swiftly the ground beneath a home, a hospital, a church, or a whole community can give way.

In the wake of such loss, what remains is not just rubble and statistics, but the quiet, enduring work of rescue, remembrance, and rebuilding, carried forward by parishioners, neighbors, volunteers, and strangers who continue to show up for each other when the earth did not.

As we attend Holy Mass this weekend, we remember with great sorrow all those we lost, who we now hold in the communion of the faithful departed, remembering them with prayer and entrusting them to God's mercy. May they rest in peace.

San Gregorio​ Magno: La humildad y el servicio son las verdaderas medidas de la grandeza

Queridos hermanos en Cristo:

Volvamos la mirada hacia un hombre nacido en la nobleza romana que eligió, en cambio, el camino estrecho de la humildad; renunció al poder terrenal para convertirse, según sus propias palabras, en servus servorum Dei —el siervo de los siervos de Dios. El Papa San Gregorio Magno gobernó la Iglesia entre los años 590 y 604, en medio de la peste, la pobreza y la inestabilidad; no lo hizo desde un trono de comodidad, sino desde un corazón inclinado al servicio. Puso los bienes de la Iglesia al servicio de los pobres, rescatando cautivos, alimentando a los hambrientos y ofreciendo ayuda a quienes sufrían, pues entendía que los bienes confiados a la Iglesia debían estar al servicio de los necesitados. En él vemos que la verdadera grandeza no se conquista, sino que se recibe como don. La tradición ha vinculado su nombre con el canto gregoriano, que se convirtió en una de las grandes expresiones de la oración litúrgica de la Iglesia. Así, cuando alzamos nuestras voces en la Misa, podemos recordar la profunda convicción de Gregorio de que la música sagrada debe elevar el corazón hacia Dios. Fue también Gregorio quien escribió la Regla pastoral, una obra fundamental sobre la responsabilidad espiritual de los pastores de la Iglesia que continúa siendo una referencia para los obispos. Y fue él quien envió a un grupo de monjes, encabezados por Agustín de Canterbury, a evangelizar Inglaterra, por lo que llegó a ser conocido como el Apóstol de los ingleses. Nombrado uno de los cuatro grandes Doctores de la Iglesia de Occidente, San Gregorio nos enseña que la sabiduría sin caridad está vacía y que todo conocimiento debe conducir al amor de Dios y al servicio del prójimo. Su vida nos recuerda que la autoridad cristiana no consiste en elevarse sobre los demás, sino en inclinarse ante sus necesidades. Que su ejemplo despierte en nosotros esa misma valentía serena: la de servir en lugar de ser servidos, y la de confiar en que Dios puede obrar maravillas a través de manos dispuestas a vaciarse por amor a los demás.

Saint Gregory: Humility And Service Are the True Measures of Greatness

Dear Beloved in Christ,

Let us turn our hearts to a man born into Roman nobility who chose instead the narrow path of humility, laying down worldly power to become, in his own tender words, servus servorum Dei—the servant of the servants of God. Pope Saint Gregory the Great governed the Church from 590 to 604 amid plague and ruin, not from a throne of ease but from a heart bent low in service, emptying the papal treasury to ransom captives, feed the hungry, and shelter the persecuted, for he believed he was but a steward of the poor. In him we see that true greatness is never grasped but given, for it was Gregory who shaped the sacred chant that still bears his name, so that when we lift our voices at Mass, we echo a melody he helped compose. It was Gregory who wrote the Pastoral Rule, still guiding bishops today, and who sent his own monks across the sea to England, earning him the title Apostle of the English. Named one of the four great Doctors of the Western Church, he teaches us that wisdom without charity is empty, and that the mind must always serve the heart's longing for God. May his example awaken in us the same quiet courage: to serve rather than be served, and to trust that God can work wonders through hands willing to be emptied for love of others.

San Juan Bautista: Hablar cuando el silencio es más fácil

Hoy nuestra Iglesia honra al humilde San Juan Bautista, aquella voz que clamaba en el desierto y que saltó de alegría incluso en el vientre de su madre Isabel, reconociendo ya la cercanía del Señor, a quien había nacido para anunciar. Él ocupa un lugar único entre todos los santos, pues la Iglesia celebra no solo el día de su martirio, sino también su nacimiento —un honor compartido únicamente con nuestro Señor y con nuestra Santísima Madre—, ya que su vida entera —desde el seno de Isabel, pasando por las aguas del Jordán, hasta la espada del verdugo— estuvo completamente tejida en el misterio de la venida de Cristo.

Es el último y más grande de los profetas, aquel que bautizó al Mesías en las aguas del Jordán y que luego, con una humildad asombrosa, afirmó no ser digno ni siquiera de desatar la correa de sus sandalias. Y cuando llegó el momento de decir la verdad a un rey que no quería escucharla, Juan no vaciló; eligió la prisión y la muerte antes que el silencio, pues comprendía —como debe hacerlo toda alma fiel— que la fidelidad a la verdad es, en sí misma, una forma de amor, y que empequeñecerse por amor a Cristo no es una pérdida, sino gloria.

Que su valentía nos impulse a decir la verdad en un mundo que a menudo prefiere un silencio cómodo, pues la grandeza a los ojos del Cielo es muy distinta de la grandeza a los ojos del mundo.
