Church planting isn’t just about the visible work; it’s about building what sustains it.

At NEU, we come alongside our teams to strengthen both the vine and the trellis for long-term impact.

Church planting in the inner city requires more than passion; it requires preparation.

NEU’s two-year apprenticeship is designed to equip pastors for the unique challenges of this work. It’s a season of growth, testing, and affirmation, ensuring you’re ready not just to plant a church, but to sustain a healthy life and ministry for years to come.

Church planting in urban neighborhoods is difficult.

The communities are often cross-cultural to those not raised in them. The challenges are real. And many churches will never be financially self-sustaining.

But these are not reasons to walk away. They are reasons to lean in.

We believe the Gospel is for every neighborhood and that faithful presence in hard places matters.

We named our Haynes School of Ministry after Lemuel Haynes: a man whose life embodied faithful, gospel-centered ministry in New England.

Born in 1753 and raised in Massachusetts, Haynes became the first Black man ordained in the United States. Often called “the Black Puritan,” he preached with conviction, humility, and deep theological clarity. His example still speaks today, calling pastors to endurance, courage, and faithfulness in hard places.

If you feel called to that kind of ministry, there’s a place for you here. Explore our internships, cohorts, and residency programs at the Haynes School of Ministry: https://www.haynesschool.org/programs
