SO WHAT IS THE ADVENTIST SANCTUARY MESSAGE - THE INVESTIGATIVE JUDGMENT?
- Make the effort to read this. It will clear away many of the misconceptions and outright lies told and believed about this incredible Adventist doctrine - a doctrine rooted in the Bible alone!
The Investigative Judgment doctrine (IJ) is powerful. I will try to keep this as simple as possible. I am currently writing a book on this. Here it is - and it is so incredibly beautiful:
Jesus left His heavenly throne and came to Earth (John 1:1, 14; Phil. 2:6-8). And He did it because He loves you. Here He took the sins of humanity upon Himself and paid the death penalty for them on the cross (Isa. 53:5-6; 1 Pet. 2:24; 2 Cor. 5:21). That's a big deal. This is called the atonement. Atonement means the price. He paid the death price for your sins - and it was done and finished on the cross. The price was paid. The sacrifice was complete (John 19:30; Heb. 10:10-14).
When He rose from the grave and returned to heaven, He began to intercede for us before God (Heb. 7:25; Rom. 8:34; 1 Tim. 2:5). We cannot pray, worship, or have any connection with God, who is sinless and perfect, without the mediation of Christ (John 14:6; Heb. 4:14-16). Note - this is not the intercession of the final judgment. This is the daily intercession between humanity and God through Jesus Christ. I believe this happened before the cross too.
And let me make something very clear here, because I believe we Adventists have sometimes made this unnecessarily difficult for our Christian brothers and sisters by the way we have framed it. The Investigative Judgment is not another phase of the atonement. It is judgment. The atonement happened at the cross. Jesus paid the price there - completely and finally. What happens in the heavenly judgment is not Jesus continuing to pay for your sins. The price has already been paid. Jesus applies that completed atonement to your case in the judgment (Heb. 9:24; 1 John 2:1-2). The cross is the atonement. The judgment is the judgment. And the completed atonement of the cross is your answer in the judgment.
According to prophecy - and this is the very same prophecy that identifies both the baptism and the death of Jesus (Dan. 9:24-27) - the final judgment in heaven began in 1844 (Dan. 8:14; Dan. 7:9-10, 13-14). It begins with the dead and ends with the living (1 Pet. 4:17; Rev. 14:6-7). People get stuck on this. I believe the date is sure, and I can prove it Biblically. But what Jesus now does for you is way more important than the date.
This is where the Sanctuary Message becomes incredibly powerful. In the judgment, the born-again follower of Jesus is not there. Do you get that? You are not there. You are not standing in that courtroom. You are not being investigated. Your life is not standing there pleading its own case. Jesus is there for you. He stands in your place. When the believer's name comes up in the judgment, Jesus stands there for you (1 John 2:1-2; Heb. 9:24). He stands there in His righteousness, His perfection and His goodness. He stands there with the atonement for your sins - the blood price of the cross. He offers the atonement and His life in place of yours (Rom. 5:18-19; 2 Cor. 5:21). And God, the great Judge, accepts it.
Jesus can do that because He took your sins to the cross and paid for them with His death (Isa. 53:5-6; 1 Pet. 2:24). He became sin for us and died in our place (2 Cor. 5:21). Therefore, He has the right to stand in your place before God. Jesus applies the completed atonement of the cross to your case in the judgment.
God looks at Jesus, not you. Your name is up, but Jesus stands there for you. I know I am pressing this, but it is important. The sin has been paid for (Rom. 3:24-26). The penalty has been paid (Rom. 6:23). And in Christ, God sees the righteousness of Jesus, not you (Phil. 3:9). The righteousness of Jesus is credited to you (Rom. 4:5-8; 2 Cor. 5:21). Remember - you are not standing there trying to prove that you were good enough. It is all Jesus. Jesus stands in your place.
His righteousness is credited to you. His perfection covers you. Through Christ, you are counted righteous before God and given the right to heaven and eternal life (Rom. 5:17-19; Eph. 2:8-9; John 3:16). I am just saying - wow, wow, wow!
That, my friend, is the Seventh-day Adventist Investigative Judgment - our Sanctuary Message. It is all there in type and antitype throughout the Old and New Testaments (Lev. 16; Heb. 8-9). Maybe now you can see why it garners so much opposition. Satan hates it. But I love it. It gives me absolute confidence that my life - full of failures and sin, along with whatever good I may have done - is not on the rack. It is Jesus. All Jesus. Only Jesus. Praise God. Truly, I am saved by Jesus (Acts 4:12; Eph. 2:8-9).
PS: Without sounding extreme - this is why I can lie here with bacterial pneumonia - three weeks now and not responding well to antibiotics yet - with full confidence. Live or die, I know whom I have believed and that He is able, willing and desiring to save me. I am so confident.
PPS: I won't die lol - this round of antibiotics seems to be starting to work, just as of today. Praise God.
