Everyone is welcome to come and worship with us on Sundays at 9:30 am Moreland Presbyterian began at Mrs. E.T. The Rev. Rev. David A. The cost $1,871.86!

Randall's Hotel in Sellwood (corner of 11th and Umatilla) in 1884. Sellwood was known in this day as a village with no sidewalks just muddy roads. The Presbytery of Oregon agreed to the organization of the church and appointed Rev. Lee Pastor of Calvary Church to serve 3 Sabbaths each month at 3 PM. would travel up the Willamette on a steamer called "City of Sellwood." In 1887 the congregation moved to a new house of worship on 16th and Spokane and officially changed the name to "The First Presbyterian Church of Sellwood." The church grew slowly and was not until 1903 that a full time minister was installed. Thompson came directly from Princeton Theological Seminary. The congregation grew from 56 to 226 in 1911. A house was built (Manse)for the Pastor made of the finest materials and craftsmanship with modern plumbing and electricity. By 1919 the congregation outgrew the church and a new location was found! November, 1921 the Church and Manse property was sold to the Church of the Nazarene. February, 1922, lots were secured on the corners of 18th/19th and Bybee and work began on a new church. The name was once again changed to Moreland Presbyterian Church. In 1950 the church expanded the building and remodeled the existing building. Two of the three lots on Bybee and 19th were purchased and the houses sold and moved. The church expanded to include a balcony to seat 100, dining room, kitchen and church offices. Moreland has gone through many changes but stands strong on a foundation built from faith, love ,hope and community.

The little pantry outside the church, on the corner of SE 19th and Bybee, was generously installed by Girl Scout Troop 10631 and has been constantly stocked by the community surrounding the church. Thank you to everyone who has sustained this resource for our broader community. We regularly hear from neighbors how much it means to them, and it’s been a real blessing to see this small act of care make a difference.

Right now, the pantry is empty, and we could use your help restocking it. Someone brings groceries and/or toiletries by every day, but neighbors also stop by throughout the day to pick up what they need. With grocery prices so high, many individuals and families are struggling to make ends meet. Keeping the pantry stocked is one small but meaningful way we can love our neighbors and build a community where we look out for one another.

Produce, cereal, pasta, ramen, rice, bread, snacks, treats, cooking oils, and just about any food that doesn’t need to be refrigerated are welcome. Toiletries are always appreciated, too, including travel-size toiletries you may have picked up from a hotel!

Stop by anytime, whether you’re giving, receiving, or both. All are welcome. And a big thank-you to Troop 10631 and all the neighbors who have helped keep this little pantry going strong!

Join MPC Youth for a movie night featuring Coraline on the evening of Friday, October 30, to experience the strange button-eyed world where an adventurous girl discovers a mysterious parallel version of her life.

Enjoy this delightfully spooky animated classic in Moreland’s Sanctuary (1814 SE Bybee Blvd.) on October 30 at 6:30 PM. All ages and stages are welcome.

Tickets are $5, with popcorn for $2 and mocktails for $3.

A Prayer for Silver Rail by Pastor Steven Koski, Lead Pastor from First Presbyterian Church of Bend

God of all comfort,

We come to you with broken hearts,
and we know they will stay broken.

Three children of our community are gone,
children who went to school expecting a normal day,
whose names were spoken by teachers this week,
whose backpacks still hang by doors at home.
There are no words that can reach the place where this grief lives, so we bring you our silence and our tears.

We hold before you the families whose lives have been torn open and changed forever.
Be near to the parents, siblings, grandparents, and friends in the hours when the house is too quiet and the questions are too loud.
Hold what they cannot carry.

We pray for the children of Silver Rail who saw what no child should see,
for teachers and staff who protected and comforted them,
for first responders who ran toward danger,
and for the doctors, nurses, and counselors now tending wounds of body and spirit.
Give them strength, rest, and people to lean on.

We confess that we are angry and afraid.
We do not understand how this keeps happening, and we will not pretend it is acceptable.
Let our grief not harden into despair.
Let it move us toward one another and toward the work of making our children safe.

Jesus, you took the children in your arms and blessed them.
We trust that these little ones are held in that same embrace,
and we ask you to hold us too, because we are not okay.

Help us be the church this week and in the weeks to come showing up for one another grieving with those who grieve without hurrying toward comfort.
Let no one in our community feel alone in this.

And in our grief, help us trust what we cannot yet feel: that nothing in all creation, not death, not violence, not the deepest sorrow, can separate us or these children from your love in Christ Jesus. Death and tragedy will not have the last word.

Love will.

Hold us in that promise until we can hold it ourselves.

In the name of Christ, whose love is stronger than death,

Amen.

Moreland Presbyterian Church’s annual Neighborhood Food Drive is in its final days!

We’re collecting food and hygiene items for Mainspring Community Food & Clothing Pantry, which provides low-barrier access to these essentials for neighbors in need.

There’s still time to contribute! Donations can be dropped off at the church office door in the parking lot off SE 19th today (Thursday) and tomorrow (Friday), October 15 and 16, from 9am to 3:30pm. Today, we will extend the time to drop off to 5pm. If you'll be coming during this extended time, please email ([email protected]) or call us (503-234-8404) before coming to the church.

You can also bring donations on Sunday, October 18, before or during worship at 9:30am. On Sunday, groceries can be left in the narthex in front of the Sanctuary, at the Bybee Blvd. entrance.

Last year, our congregation and neighbors donated 1,749 pounds of food to Mainspring. We’re hoping to reach a full ton this year. Every contribution helps, and we’d be grateful for your support. Thank you!
