Randall's Hotel in Sellwood (corner of 11th and Umatilla) in 1884. Sellwood was known in this day as a village with no sidewalks just muddy roads. The Presbytery of Oregon agreed to the organization of the church and appointed Rev. Lee Pastor of Calvary Church to serve 3 Sabbaths each month at 3 PM. would travel up the Willamette on a steamer called "City of Sellwood." In 1887 the congregation mov

ed to a new house of worship on 16th and Spokane and officially changed the name to "The First Presbyterian Church of Sellwood." The church grew slowly and was not until 1903 that a full time minister was installed. Thompson came directly from Princeton Theological Seminary. The congregation grew from 56 to 226 in 1911. A house was built (Manse)for the Pastor made of the finest materials and craftsmanship with modern plumbing and electricity. By 1919 the congregation outgrew the church and a new location was found! November, 1921 the Church and Manse property was sold to the Church of the Nazarene. February, 1922, lots were secured on the corners of 18th/19th and Bybee and work began on a new church. The name was once again changed to Moreland Presbyterian Church. In 1950 the church expanded the building and remodeled the existing building. Two of the three lots on Bybee and 19th were purchased and the houses sold and moved. The church expanded to include a balcony to seat 100, dining room, kitchen and church offices. Moreland has gone through many changes but stands strong on a foundation built from faith, love ,hope and community.

Many of us have been following the news of the Bench Fire and the devastating impact it has had on the Warm Springs Reservation, as well as the efforts of Warm Springs Presbyterian Church to support its community in the midst of these fires. Bill Taylor, Jill Taylor, and Emma Cowell were just at Warm Springs Presbyterian Church on Sunday, July 19, to lead worship, so this tragedy feels especially close to our church family. While firefighters have made significant progress protecting the main part of the community, several families have lost or sustained damage to their homes. As recovery begins, Warm Springs Presbyterian Church has shared an urgent need for baby supplies through its Food & Supply Pantry.

Cash donations are being accepted by the Presbytery, cascadespresbytery.org. 100% of donations will directly fund the food and supply pantry at WSPC, and allow them to respond to critical needs as they arise in the coming weeks. Click on the DONATE button and select Warm Springs.

Emma Cowell, Moreland's Director of Worship Music, will be part of a free performance of Cruzar la Cara de la Luna, happening both today, Friday, 7/24, at Shute Park in Hillsboro, and Sunday, 7/26, at Peninsula Park in Portland.

"The U.S./Mexico border isn’t the only obstacle dividing the Velásquez family. Cruzar la Cara de la Luna tells the story of a multigenerational Mexican American family separated by countries, cultures, and consequences in search of new possibilities. As their grandfather journeys back in time to reflect on his life in his final days, the members of the Velásquez family must make their own migration across land and through memory, searching their hearts to discover where they belong. Richly interwoven with mariachi tradition and a newly arranged orchestration, this modern story reminds us that family knows no borders.
