American History - The Little Known New Sweden Colony

Don Cox has prepared a slide presentation to share his insights on the little-known history of the New Sweden Colony which was present in North America between 1638 and 1655 and continued its influence beyond 1655. We are taught and hear of the Mayflower and the Pilgrims at Plymouth Rock, but we don't usually hear of the Lutheran Swedes at "The Rocks" in present day Delaware and up through the present-day Philadelphia area. Don's presentation will share some history of Sweden at the time the plans were formed to send settlers to the New World, the journey of the initial ships (primarily the Kalmar Nyckel) and the experiences of the colony and its people after their arrival. The presentation will include a showing of the hour-long Emmy nominated documentary "Kalmar Nyckel - the Forgotten Journey" produced by the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation of Wilmington, Delaware. Don's eighth great grandfather was on the third voyage of the Kalmar Nyckel and was a prominent member of the New Sweden colony and the earliest Lutheran church at Tinnicum and the later decision to merge churches and build a new log church at Wicaco and later the brick Gloria Dei (Old Swedes) Church that is still used for worship today in Philadelphia. All are invited to this presentation and bring your friends and neighbors!
