Do you ever have days when you just go from one thing to the next? Sometimes they are appointments or errands. Sometimes they are interruptions of your plans. And often it’s both in the same day. That’s the kind of day Jesus is having in today’s gospel: Matthew 9:9-13, 18-26. Join us this Sunday as we look at how Jesus deals with this and what we can do also.

Second Corinthians 2:13-13 offers a great example of how our worship services are biblically based and to remind us that we all have a part to play in our worship life together. Paul writes in his second letter to the Corinthians “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holt Spirit be with all of you.” This will be the focus of my sermon this Trinity Sunday, because they remind us of very important gifts that our Triune God gives to us - gifts of grace, and of love, and of communion. Gifts that we need now as much as we ever have.

words can describe, and yet intimately present with us.

P: Holy Trinity, empower us to enter into partnership with you for the flourishing of all creation with gratitude and joy.
L: We come to receive Christ’s commission to make disciples, to baptize, and to teach

The day of Pentecost, this Sunday, is always a great celebration for the Church. We gather year on this day, to hear the story of the birth of the Church, as told in Acts 2: when the Holy Spirit came upon the apostles like the rush of a violent wind, with tongues of fire dancing on their heads; people of all nations hearing the apostles in their own language, and more than 3,000 responding by being baptized into Christ. It is an amazing story to hear again, isn’t it? But I wonder, when we hear this story , whether we are missing something today. Where is the wind and fire today? Where is the excitement of that first Pentecost? Join us this Sunday as we unpack Act 2:1-21 and answer these questions.

Every year on the seventh Sunday of Easter, which is the last Sunday of Easter before Pentecost, our Gospel reading is taken from this very famous prayer in John 17:1-20. It is a beautiful prayer offered by Jesus for his disciples, and for all “those who will believe in him through their word.” (John 17:20). Which, of course, is us. It is a long beautiful prayer, but it can be a little confusing. Please join us this Sunday as we break it down to help us better understand exactly what Jesus is praying for, when he prays for us.

P: We come for deeper insights into Scripture.
L: We come to receive the power of the Spirit for our ministry.
P: We come to offer our talents, our gifts, and our presence to God and the
church.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION (together)
Eternal God, you have sent the Holy Spirit to instruct, guide and empower us in our ministry, but we try to get by on our own strength. You invite us to see with the eyes of faith, so that we can know your power at work in the world, yet we look at the confusion around us, and know only despair. You have promised us a glorious inheritance in the resurrection. Still, we live as though we had no hope. Open us
to the Holy Spirit, lift our insights beyond the chaos of the world, hold out to us again the joy that awaits us. May we live, speak and act as a community with a mission, with power, and with assurance. In the name of Christ, who sits at your right hand in
power. Amen

As Christians, we should be full of hope, always, regardless of our circumstances. And we should always be ready to share our hope with others, and to defend it. Hope, along with faith and love, describes how we as believers approach life - with faith, with love, and with hope. And, since hope seems like something that we all need right now, that is what I will be focusing on this coming Sunday, “Defending Our Hope,” from 1 Peter 3:15.

Offer silent prayers of confession.
ALL: At times we feel so fragile, getting blown about by the latest crisis, by bad news, by our own short tempers and failings. You call us to hold fast to what is good, but so often we flounder, unable to find that solid thing that will center us again. Help us, we
pray. Help us to see you as our center, and to cling to the good that you create in the world. Help us to set aside all our jealousies and prejudices, all our betrayals and lies, all that adds to the world’s hurt. Help us to grow even more into Christ’s likeness, that
we will bear his love and truth to the world. We pray this in his name. Amen.
