Most of us have something we miss that wasn't actually good for us. An old habit. An old relationship. A season of life we remember as easier than it really was.

Memory has a way of editing. It keeps the good parts and quietly drops the cost. Sometimes what holds us back isn't what's in front of us, but what we keep looking back at.

This Sunday at Friendship Baptist in Plainfield we are looking at an old story about a young man who had everything, was offered more, and walked away, and why it is so hard to let go of a life that only looks like life.

It is easier than ever to write people off. One opinion we cannot stand, one comment that gets under our skin, and suddenly a whole person becomes a category. We stop seeing a neighbor and start seeing an enemy.

Most of us have felt it from both sides. The friend we quietly stopped talking to. The relative we avoid at dinner. The words we said in frustration that we would take back if we could.

This Sunday at Friendship Baptist in Plainfield we are talking about what happens to us when disagreeing turns into despising, and whether there is a better way to see the person across from us.

There is an old saying that you can tell everything about a person by how they treat someone who can do nothing for them. The server. The janitor. The stranger who needs a hand when you are already running late.

If you have ever watched Undercover Boss, you know the moment. The employee finds out that the new hire they were kind to, or rude to, was the one in charge all along. Their face says it all. They had no idea who was standing in front of them.

This Sunday at Friendship Baptist in Plainfield we are looking at a story about a King who showed up in the last place anyone expected him, and what that means for how we treat the people around us.

Most of us carry around a quiet number in our heads. What we think we are worth. It goes up when things go well and drops when they don't, and we spend a lot of energy trying to keep it high.

But there is a difference between feeling good about yourself and knowing you have worth that cannot be taken from you. One you have to keep earning. The other you can only receive.

This Sunday at Friendship Baptist in Plainfield we are asking where human worth actually comes from, and what changes when you stop trying to earn it.
