What is Contemplative prayer?
Contemplative prayer is less about talking to God and more about learning to be with God. Rather than filling our prayer with what we think or want, we bring our real self to God and learn to rest in the awareness that God is already present and loves us. In the contemplative tradition, prayer is not primarily about trying to get God to do something for us, but about allowing God to transform us from the inside out. As Richard Rohr often emphasizes, contemplation helps us move beyond simply thinking about God to actually experiencing and receiving God’s presence, love, and life within us. It involves letting go of our retributive views of God, of the false self we've created, of our need to control or to fully understand, and of the idea that our value is in our accomplishments. Contemplation is less a "method" of praying and more a different way of seeing--many people, as they grow in it, find more joy in Creation and in people, more healing for their wounds, greater self-acceptance, and more compassion for others.
