Pierre First United Methodist Church is expanding its mission in a hands-on, meaningful way, and you’re invited to be part of it!
Our new Weaving Mats Ministry transforms everyday plastic shopping bags into durable sleeping mats for people facing displacement and crisis. In partnership with Midwest Mission, an UMCOR - United Methodist Committee On Relief partner, these mats will be sent around the world to provide comfort, dignity, and a safer place to rest when disasters strike.
This ministry is a beautiful blend of caring for people and caring for creation. By repurposing plastic bags that might otherwise end up in landfills, we’re turning something ordinary into a tangible expression of God’s love.
We have the tools ready, including a 3' x 6' loom at the church, but we need your help to bring this ministry to life. Each mat requires about 1,000 plastic shopping bags, and that’s where you come in! You can support this effort by donating your clean, flattened plastic bags. A collection tote is located near the office in the coat rack area.
And we are now open for you to come help! We will be open on Tuesday, May 12 from 3:00 pm - 8:00 pm for you to come and go as you like to help weave, sort and flatten bags, and to tie the bags together to make plarn (plastic yarn). There is something to do at any age or at any level of creativity. You can stand or you can sit; whatever is more comfortable for you. We are located in the old AAUW/Lil Learners Preschool room on the lower level. Please enter in the south doors by the TCC.
Come be a part of Weaving Mats where we are turning waste into worth and weaving hope - one mat at a time.
