“That’s Just the Way It is”

One of my go-to statements is, “It is what it is.” I use this phrase to explain situations I can’t change. Certain aspects of life are what they are. You can’t change them. Don’t fight it; just accept it. Other statements like, “That’s just the way things are,” “Such is life,” and “You can’t change it, so you might as well accept it” strike a similar tone. These statements assist us in reflecting on how God has set things up—the created order.

Jesus remarks in Mark 10:6, “From the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’” The first five words are very important. In Christ’s debate with the Pharisees about marriage, the Lord appeals to how things were “from the beginning” for how things should be today. This pattern from Genesis provides us with an unalterable template for how a human should behave. You can’t go back and change what God has set up, so we accept what God has established. It is what it is.

Scripture speaks of this divine ordering elsewhere, too. Another passage is Rom 1:26 where Paul writes of sexual desires that are “natural” and “against nature.” Natural desires are ordered according to the created order, whereas unnatural desires go against the created order. God has ordered human sexuality in a specific way. To reject it is to reject the way things “naturally” are. Best to accept what God has made. Such is life.

Why is the one man-one woman union of marriage correct? Because both Scripture and the created order tell us so (Mark 10:6). We do best when we accept the way things are, rather than fighting against God’s order. Madness results from rejecting the created order, and we see this craziness today in our culture. Be a reality-accepter, not a reality-denier. Listen to Scripture and the created order. They speak with one voice—God’s voice.

Before the new cycle begins, we will also offer a special introductory session, “Loss of a Spouse,” on Sunday, August 30, from 2:00–4:00 PM.

All GriefShare sessions begin at 2:00 PM.

What Do You Mean by “Hell?”

The English term hell is not precise. Take, for instance, the Apostles Creed. In one portion of this ancient creed, the text reads, “Jesus Christ descended into hell.” Many Christians have rejected this statement, because they (rightly) disbelieve Christ went to the Lake of Fire after his death. The issue is that the Apostle’s Creed does not mean “Lake of Fire” with its use of the term “hell.” Based upon the Latin term, a less confusing way to render the statement “he descended into hell” is “he descended into the lower regions [of the dead].” The Latin term for hell means lower regions. The English term hell used to mean “lower regions of the dead,” but not anymore.

Another way that the term hell can be misunderstood is in relation to the intermediate state. When someone dies, their body goes in the ground, and their soul either enters into divine bliss or divine agony (Luke 16:19–31). The destination of the wicked man in this passage is “hades” (v. 23). Is hades hell? Maybe, but it’s important to remember that hades will not last forever. Hades is a temporary holding place for souls the wicked. The Apostle John states in Rev 20:14 that at the end of time “hades” will be thrown into “the Lake of fire.”

The last way (and the best way) that the term hell can be understood is to refer to the ultimate destination of the wicked. At the end of time, God will raise all people from the dead—both the righteous and the unrighteous (Dan 12:2). Only after this future resurrection, the eternal God will cast the wicked into the Lake of Fire to suffer punishment for all of eternity (Rev 20:15).

This analysis leaves us with three different concepts of hell: the underworld, hades, and the Lake of Fire. This means that the term hell doesn’t have just one meaning. It has three different meanings. When I use the term hell, I tend to mean the Lake of Fire, not the underworld or hades. When you use the term, what do you mean by it? Keep thinking about the Word!
