Have you ever wondered why Catholics genuflect?

Join Fr. Fernando Camou for this week’s episode of “Now You Know” to find out!

“Now You Know” is a weekly series where priests from the Diocese of Phoenix answer common Catholic questions. Each short episode offers engaging insights and “ah-ha” moments, explores Church history and provides the opportunity for a deepening of faith.

Jesus took Peter, James, and John up the mountain… and for a moment, they saw His glory.
His face shone. His clothes became dazzling white.
In the middle of ordinary life, God gave them a glimpse of who Jesus really is.
Sometimes we need that too.
A reminder that even in the hard or ordinary days, there is glory underneath.
That Jesus is more than we can see.
Lord, open our eyes today.

On this Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Bishop John Dolan reflects on contemporary Canadian artist Jonathan Pageau’s carved relief, “Christ Pulling St. Peter from the Water.”

Peter’s story on those stormy waters started with great faith — with his willingness to step out of the boat in a way no one else would. But then the wind came, he became afraid, he began to sink. Yet Peter’s little faith is not the end of the story. Even while sinking, he still knows where to turn. He cries out and immediately Jesus stretches out His hand.

Happy Feast of St. John Vianney!

He was nearly turned away from the priesthood for struggling with his studies, yet God used him to bring thousands back to confession and to the love of Christ. Today is a good day to pray for our priests, who spend themselves for us in that same quiet, faithful way.

Happy Feast of St. Bonaventure! On the mountain where St. Francis received the stigmata, Bonaventure wrote that the soul climbs to God not by cleverness but by love, and that at the summit the mind falls silent and only the heart goes on. He was one of the great minds of his age, and he insisted that all of it was worth nothing without prayer. May our work today, whatever it is, be a step on that same climb.

St. Bonaventure, pray for us!
