🚨 DISASTER RELIEF UPDATE—California Wildfires 🔥: At least 12 Church of God families have tragically lost their homes to the fires in Southern California; many more have been evacuated and do not yet know the condition of their homes. Still others are making critical decisions regarding where and when to go as they evacuate their communities at this time. Your prayers are vital. 🙏

Church of God Ministries is in contact with leadership in California to determine how to best come alongside families affected by the fires. To equip Church of God Ministries to respond with relief now, and recovery in the weeks ahead, gifts can be made to the Disaster Relief Fund ➡️: bit.ly/3UMCtTN

Please note that 100% of donations made to this fund go to the field to equip local churches responding to disasters globally. ❤️

A Fresh Experience of Grace and Forgiveness… Here’s a story that’ll preach

Why do we need a fresh experience of grace and forgiveness? Because grace is receiving what we need, not what we deserve.

David Hagler, a writer for the L.A. Times, shared a story that illustrates this perfectly. He recalled driving too fast in the snow when a policeman pulled him over and issued a ticket. David tried to talk his way out of it, explaining how the ticket would raise his insurance rates. He begged for grace. The officer, however, simply replied, "If you don’t like it, you can go to court."

Years later, David was umpiring in a city league game when the same officer came up to bat. The two recognized each other. The officer asked, "How did things go with your ticket?" David stared back at him and said, "Swing at everything!"

Grace. It's a funny thing, isn't it? God gives us grace not because we deserve it, but because He loves us and knows exactly what we need at all times. As Ephesians 1:8 says, "God has showered upon us the richness of His grace for how well He understands us and knows what is best for us at all times."

God invites us to bring it all to Him—the good, the bad, the broken, the shame, and the secrets. He wants us to bring everything
In this moment, as we stand at the beginning of a new year, God is speaking directly to you: You matter. I love you. You can start over. And this time, I will help you. As it says in James 4:6-8, "God gives grace to the humble…so let God work His will in you. Say a quiet 'Yes' to God, and He’ll be there in no time."

Today, I hope you’ll say Yes—Yes, God, I need a new understanding. Yes, God, I need a new beginning, a fresh power, a renewed hope, a fresh start.

Let’s make this year different. Let's say "Yes" to the grace and forgiveness God is offering.

Do you know the origin story of the Christmas Tree?
We know for sure that it goes back to German Christians in the 16th century. But the legend is that it goes back to Martin Luther himself…the founder of the Protestant Reformation.

The story goes: One December night he was out on a walk & writing that Sunday’s sermon in his head. When he was struck by the beauty of the stars twinkling in the trees overhead. So he cut down a tree, took it inside his home & put candles on it…all to teach his children about advent. The tradition caught on in Germany, but not across the world. Then German immigrants brought Christmas trees to Pennsylvania in the 1700’s, but Christmas was looked down upon by the wider society because of its pagan/secular history. In fact, in 1659 the general court of Massachusetts made the observance of Christmas, other than a church service, against the law…you could be subject to fines for having the Christmas Spirit…

Bah Humbug

It wasn’t until 1848 that the Christmas tree became socially acceptable in the U.S., when newspapers ran a picture of the royal family all sitting around a Christmas tree with Queen Victoria & Prince Albert, then it spread to the culture at large even then, the first tree wasn’t put up in Rockefeller plaza until 1931, and because the tradition began with Luther, the reformer, the Vatican did not put up a Christmas tree until 1982

But there’s a spiritual logic to the symbol of the Christmas tree, and to Dec.25th as Christmas day. Ancient Christians chose Dec. 25th to celebrate Advent in the church calendar, not because Jesus was born on Dec. 25th, he most likely was not, but for a few reasons:
First, to replace the Roman festival of Saturnalia due to its pagan nature.
Second, because they thought that winter solstice was the best time of the year to get in touch with the heart behind Advent, that feeling of dark, cold, and winter, when everything is dormant back to the Christmas tree. The Evergreen is symbolic in that it is a sign of life in the dead of winter, but it’s the light on the evergreen that resonates at a deep level that feeling of light in the darkest, longest night of the year is a kind image of Christ’s coming and the image of Christ’s coming as light goes back to long before Martin Luther, to before the time of Christ.

“The people who walk in darkness will see a great light. For those who live in a land of deep darkness, a light will shine.” Isaiah 9:2

Merry Christmas to you all and I look forward to visiting your churches in 2025
