Kindling Faith and the Urban Theological Institute hosted the annual Nolde Lecture on Wednesday, April 15th. The Rev. Dr. Frederick Nolde was a Lutheran theologian, pastor, and professor who served on the faculty of the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia, where he also held leadership roles including dean. At the seminary, he helped shape a generation of church leaders with a strong emphasis on the church’s responsibility in public life, particularly in areas of social ethics, ecumenism, and global engagement.

Our keynote at the Nolde lecture (pictured with Revs. Drs. Quintin Robertson and Martin Otto-Zimmann) was the Rev. Dr. Clarence Wright. Dr. Wright holds degrees from Temple University, Missio Seminary, and Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School, where he earned a Doctor of Ministry with concentrations in transformative leadership and prophetic preaching. He is also the inaugural Fellow for Theology and Ministry at the Fred Rogers Institute and Pittsburgh Seminary.

A scholar of practical theology, he is the author of The Sunday After: Preaching in Moments and Movements (2023), reflecting his commitment to preaching that engages contemporary social realities. Beyond the pulpit and classroom, he is also a poet, musician, and community leader, embodying a holistic approach to ministry that integrates faith, culture, and public life.
