💫 It’s time for our annual Involvement Fair! 💫 This Sunday, September 27, stick around after service for our Involvement Fair! Meet our lay leaders from social justice, spiritual development, membership, music and worship ministries, children’s programs and more! Learn more about all that we’ve got going on and how you can get involved.

From our Immigrant Rights team, leading vigils with New Sanctuary Movement of Philadelphia, our Flash Choir, singing at protests around the city, to Small Group Ministries, who meet monthly to deepen relationships and spirituality, to our Hospitality Team, who usher and welcome new members, there’s space for everybody! Come see where you can fit in. 💫

You may not notice it every Sunday. You can’t see it from the street. But after years of intentional planning, fundraising, budgeting, designing, and countless volunteer hours, we have a new Sanctuary roof. One that will last a generation. A promise to our future. A building for tomorrow.

It is a huge accomplishment to get this done, especially while treasured community spaces and historic church buildings are demolished around the city, as repair costs soar out of reach. With our building repaired, we look forward to many more years housing our congregation, as well as artistic, civic, educational, and spiritual activities and so much more.

Thank you for your generous contributions to our Capital Campaign! With your support we now have a brand new Sanctuary roof! We have also had extensive Sanctuary masonry repairs carried out over the spring and summer to take advantage of the scaffolding that was already in place. The Sanctuary roof replacement and repairs have been a big lift this year, coordinated by congregants in the Property Working Group, Capital Projects Group, and Friends of 2125, and church staff.

We are excited to offer another Men’s Group session this fall every other Tuesday, beginning September 15. The Men’s Group’s vision is to build supportive relationships with other UU men, create a wise and mature masculinity, ally ourselves with love and justice, and disavow the ways men have historically perpetuated injustice in the world. We are seeking qualified nursery, K-5 and tween teachers to provide care for children on Sunday mornings from 10am to 1pm, during our Worship services, as part of our Spirit+Ed program. This is a part-time job with a low-key, reliable team. The hourly rate is $20. There is a sweet nursery and classroom setup and lots of loving support. Background check required.

Celebrate our interconnectedness with the animal world at Worship this Sunday. Bring your well-behaved furry friends to the Sanctuary or your Zoom camera to receive a blessing in this service based on the tradition of St. Francis.

We’ll be back in the Sanctuary this Sunday at 11am for this intergenerational service. You can also always join service on Zoom - visit philauu.org for the link! You’re invited to bring well-behaved or crated pets to service. Pictures of shy or departed pets, stuffed animals, or other symbolic animals are invited to receive a blessing too!

Save the date for our in-gathering Water Ceremony Ingathering service on Sunday, September 13 at 11am in person or on Zoom. In this ceremony, we gather and bring water from places sacred to each of us, whether that’s a best friend’s house, neighborhood pool, ocean or lake, to add together and bless. Remember to save some water from a special place to bring with you to this service.

Thanks to all who attended and supported our “Sing Sing to SCI Chester” Weekend of events highlighting mass incarceration and the transformative power of theatre, film and higher education in carceral settings.

We began with a screening of Sing Sing and talkback with congregant and SCI Chester professor, Valerie Flower, Friday night. On Saturday evening, we got to hear a special reading of Dominique Morisseau’s Pipeline. Sunday, after service, student playwrights from SCI Chester performed new works, including a dramatic reading and talkback featuring excerpts from Martin Luther King Jr.’s Letter from Birmingham Jail, Blood Brothers, a poignant ten-minute play by Kenneth Pigford, and America’s Baby, a compelling monologue written by Jy’Aire Smith-Pennick while incarcerated. We are grateful to all of the talented playwrights who shared their work with us!

The events were organized by congregants and members of our Decarceration Team, in partnership with Eastern University’s Theatre Department and the Philadelphia Film Society, featuring student playwrights from SCI Chester & Eastern University’s Prison Education Program.
